Feed

  • Reflection Question
    Food Choose Organic Ingredients
It is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” What is your response to that statement?

    Evi Alvarez 3/30/2020 4:43 PM
I strongly believe we can feed the entire world with healthy and nutritious organic food...that's how it was done for centuries prior to our time. With the proper growing techniques and support from governments, we could grow enough organic food to feed everyone. It might take a little time to coordinate things in motion, but I have full faith in clean foods!

Getting outside more and practicing mindfulness has been easier now that I am home and have more time to walk my dogs and spend time journaling.

  • Evi Alvarez 3/25/2020 2:21 PM
Now that we are home and online, I have actually found it more difficult to complete my tasks and practice sustainability. With covid 19, I feel like my plastic use has greatly increased and it's hard to not waste my time on social media. I am pushing myself in new ways to practice sustainability this week.
  • Reflection Question
    Simplicity Limit Social Media
Social media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also take more time than we realize or intend to give. After doing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?

    Evi Alvarez 3/06/2020 11:34 AM
I've noticed that limiting my social media has allowed me to be more productive with my time. I have also found myself out in nature more often because of the extra time I have now...more beach days and frisbee games with friends. I feel happier and more relaxed.
  • Reflection Question
    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Evi Alvarez 3/06/2020 11:29 AM
Recently I've been practicing eating my meals without distractions like Hulu or Instagram. It's been a nice break from scene time and I've also felt more refreshed eating my meals with friends and just enjoying our views here on campus while we eat.
  • Reflection Question
Simplicity Go for a Daily Walk
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

    Evi Alvarez 2/10/2020 6:34 PM
I have been taking my frisbee out to the field with a couple of friends and then going on a walk back to our room almost every day. I've really noticed a surge of energy and happiness in just the last week of doing this.
  • Reflection Question
    Nature Practice Gratitude for Earth
Kathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How do we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?

    Evi Alvarez 2/03/2020 6:20 PM
I do. I think being intentional about practicing gratitude is extremely important to our mental health and happiness. I try to practice gratitude by writing it down in my journal or texting loved ones often to thank them for being in my life. As a society, I think we need to practice gratitude more often by teaching it in schools.
  • Reflection Question
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?

    Evi Alvarez 1/28/2020 6:53 PM
I've been challenging myself to buy fewer things even when I want them to limit my carbon footprint. It's been especially hard not buying new accessories that I see online that are really cute. I have to ask myself, "do I absolutely love this and need this?" I've has help from my best friend who has helped me stay accountable.

    • Professor Morrell 2/03/2020 10:41 AM
thats great that you have someone to keep you accountable - purchasing mindfully is vital!
  • Reflection Question
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

    Evi Alvarez 1/24/2020 4:35 PM
I would like to get to bed a little earlier so that I can wake up earlier in the mornings. I have found that when I get off of social media and put on a guided meditation I fall asleep faster which helps me reach my goal.
