Sarah's Actions

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Turn it off

I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

This experience has been pretty easy for the most part. I am proud to say that I was able to successfully complete almost every day, with only a couple of slip-ups. For example, I went to a movie the other day and ordered an Icee, and completely forgot about my challenge, but that was the only time I've used a straw through the challenge. I also left a light on when I wasn't using it yesterday, but shut it off as soon as I remembered it.

At the beginning, turning things off when I was done with them was a challenge. Especially with my electronics. I am used to just leaving things on because I don't think about how much energy I'm wasting. Turning off lights was something drilled into my head by my parents, but they said it was because they wanted less of an energy bill. Saying no to straws was pretty easy at first, because I've been trying to reduce the amount of straws I use, but I ordered a smoothie the other day, and it was very strange to drink it without a straw.
