Sustainable Shopping

I will make a conscious decision to avoid "fast fashion" choices and do a "no spend" year. But for essentials, I will not spend until April 1, 2022.

I was unaware of the concept until last week in my undergrad class.  The students were challenging me on a case study about Walmart's operational processes, given that Walmart's management tends towards dehumanizing labor and create what they called "fast fashion".  Because of cheap prices, people buy more than they need and throw it out faster, impacting the environment.  They brought up the same wasteful habits enabled by Amazon.  I had just done a "no spend" Lenten observance, buying only essentials such as locally sourced foods and repairs but after this conversation, I have committed to a "no spend" year.  Savings will go to my church's support of the Poway and Escondido homeless population, rather than buying cheap goods that end up in a landfill.

Glad to hear this is coming into classroom conversation! No spend lent is a great idea and I commend you for your no spend year ahead! Its a great way to refocus on what is important and away for all that society pushes us for!
