  • Reflection Question
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I think it is important to carry a reusable mug or beverage container with us just in case so we can reduce our waste.
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Walk Instead
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

I don't think this fact applies to me because of all the walking that I do in a day to and from campus. However, I definitely could utilize my bike more often when going places further than I would prefer to walk.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

This doesn't surprise me and this money could be spent in so many different ways.
  • Reflection Question
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

We learned in class that our energy in La Crosse is mostly generated by the waste incinerator on French Island. This however does release some harmful emissions
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

Repairing is definitely an area that I could incorporate into my life more by fixing things that I can rather than buying new.
  • Reflection Question
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

Running outside allows me to enjoy nature while getting in my exercise, walking or biking to the gym, or going for an evening walk with my roommates to take a study break.
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I keep two reusable shopping bags in my car. This reminds me to take one in the store with me when I have to pick up a few things, rather than taking home unnecessary plastic bags.
  • Reflection Question
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

carrying my hydroflask with me everywhere completely eliminates my need to buy water or bottled beverages
