Alex's Actions
Community
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 3 conversations.
Community
LEARN ABOUT TRANS, FEMME, AND NONBINARY EXPERIENCES
I will spend 45 minutes learning about the experiences of trans, femme, and/or nonbinary people.
Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided below and spend 30 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community while observing best practices in my region for not spreading COVID-19.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 45 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Water
Fix Leaky Faucets
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water a day or 270 (1,020 L) gallons of water a month per faucet.
Community
Research Restorative Justice
I will spend 30 minutes learning about restorative justice and conflict resolution opportunities in my own community or state.
Community
Join my Student Government or Local Group
I will join my neighborhood association, student government, or another local group of decision makers.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 45 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Leave No Trace
I will practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Transportation
Walk Instead
I will walk 2 mile(s) each day instead of driving and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 30 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 45 minute(s) each day.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 45 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
Joyful Movement
I will spend 60 minutes doing an activity where I'm both moving my body and enjoying myself.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.

Reflection QuestionWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Alex Brown 3/26/2023 8:28 PMTwo-sided printing has been a very easy way for me to reduce the amount of paper I use on a daily basis. While I often don't use paper at all, preferring just to read my texts online, when I do need to print something I have reverted to making it double-sided unless specifically asked otherwise to save paper. -
Reflection QuestionHealth Joyful MovementWhat's your favorite activity(ies) in which you experience joy while being active and moving?
Alex Brown 3/26/2023 8:24 PMOne of my favorite activities is rockclimbing. Today was a particularly exciting day because I had a rockclimbing competition which made it all the more fun, and definitely brings joy to my life. -
Alex Brown 3/23/2023 2:43 PMToday, one of my classes was conducted in the National Museum of Asian Art because they have an exhibit on Monsoons, which is related to our class, but when figuring out how to get there, I decided to walk to the Rosslyn metro station in order to reduce my carbon footprint from transportation. The exhibit was beautiful as well and if you have the opportunity you should absolutely check it out. -
Alex Brown 3/21/2023 9:07 AMI joined the commission for the environment in my town and we are advocating for the implementation of a solar canopy to put on the parking lots that are around the town to both keep cars cool and reduce emissions in that way, but also provide renewable energy to the town through the solar panels.-

Alex Brown 3/21/2023 9:05 AMI did research for a restorative justice proposal that is hopefully going to be implemented on Georgetown's campus to improve the justice system at the university that will hopefully be implemented in the future. While there are many steps to improve the process, the research I did was to look at what the University of San Diego is doing with restorative justice, and interview someone in their Center for Restorative Justice, the interview is likely to come out on the podcast SAPE Speaks in the near future if people would like to listen to it. -
Reflection QuestionWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Alex Brown 3/21/2023 8:59 AMI regularly use single-use coffee cups because they come with the meal plan and I sadly need a coffee in the morning, so when I go to Whisk I always get a plastic coffee cup. The easy solution would be to make coffee in my room and use a reusable cup for my coffee every morning, however paying for my own coffee is not feasible every day, particularly when I am already paying for it on the meal plan, but using a reusable cup at whisk is an opportunity to reduce plastic waste in the future. -
Reflection QuestionWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Alex Brown 3/19/2023 1:39 PMThe significant human activities that affect the health of local water ecosystems are mostly driving cars around and littering both of which allow for either the leaching of harmful materials into groundwater systems or when runoff occurs, it brings harmful materials into local ecosystems. Not littering clearly helps the environment and walking/biking instead of taking cars would help. Participating in cleanups for roads can make a small change, but having larger waste-water treatment facilities so that trash that goes into sewer systems does not end up in rivers during heavy rainfall could make a change on a larger scale. -
Alex Brown 3/17/2023 9:44 AMOne part of my ecochallenge has been to not use plastic straws, but I have instead been using paper straws rather than metal straws or not using straws at all but I am curious whether paper straws are actually that much better for the environment.-
Marguerite Saunders 3/18/2023 5:48 PMThis is an interesting point, Alex. I was under the impression that paper straws were better than plastic, but if neither paper nor plastic straws are great then perhaps it's better to forego them when possible. Your question makes me think of debates over plastic bags vs paper bags and how paper bags are much more resource intensive to produce than plastic!

Reflection QuestionHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Alex Brown 3/15/2023 8:14 AMHaving this daily goal has made me notice how little sleep I truly get, or mostly how little I get 8 hours of sleep let alone getting more than that. Prioritizing sleep is definitely something that I need to improve on in the future.-
Alex Johnson 3/16/2023 10:10 AMI agree-though it may be tough to choose to give up opportunities to do work or spend time with friends, I have started to prioritize my sleep, knowing that it will be beneficial in the long run. (also, Happy Belated Birthday!)

Alex Brown 3/02/2023 6:40 AMOne question I've had with doing the 5-Minute showers, does it mean that I am not clean?
