Enrico's Actions

Energy

Power Down the Computer

I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Energy

Adjust the Thermostat

I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Prevent Recycling Contamination

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use Reusable Bags

If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Go for a Daily Walk

I will take a 20-minute walk outside each day.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Choose Organic Ingredients

I will enjoy 1 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Transportation

Work from Home

I will work from home 20 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.

Completed
One-Time Action

Transportation

Use Public Transit

I will use public transit 8 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Brush My Teeth Without Running Water

I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

5-Minute Showers

I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion

I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.

Completed
One-Time Action

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

  • Reflection Question
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

Waste dropped into tap water, keep tap water flowing when not needed, absorbing water from unsustainable sources like ground water
  • Reflection Question
Water Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
What is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?

    Enrico Citiolo's avatar
    Enrico Citiolo 10/27/2022 3:59 PM
I don’t know but you can find it probably on government websites
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

    Enrico Citiolo's avatar
    Enrico Citiolo 10/27/2022 3:58 PM
I use straws when at fast food restaurants, but you don’t really need them to drink. So I can stop using them
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

    Enrico Citiolo's avatar
    Enrico Citiolo 10/27/2022 3:57 PM
You could leave reusable bags in your car or always take them with you when shopping
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

    Enrico Citiolo's avatar
    Enrico Citiolo 10/27/2022 3:56 PM
The difficult part is that lots of places don’t have separate trash cans for recyclable products
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Use Public Transit
The US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and just 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not? How would you adjust them if you could?

    Enrico Citiolo's avatar
    Enrico Citiolo 10/27/2022 3:56 PM
It surprises me that education is such a small percentage. I would add more of the budget to education and transportation infrastructure to make aware of the current climate problems.
  • Reflection Question
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Enrico Citiolo's avatar
    Enrico Citiolo 10/27/2022 3:54 PM
You see more of the nature
  • Reflection Question
    Food Choose Organic Ingredients
Many people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?

    Enrico Citiolo's avatar
    Enrico Citiolo 10/27/2022 3:54 PM
It is partly true, because organic food is more expensive. But you can increase the amount of organic food you eat.
  • Reflection Question
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

    Enrico Citiolo's avatar
    Enrico Citiolo 10/27/2022 3:52 PM
I can shut the lights off when not at home
  • Reflection Question
    Energy Power Down the Computer
What are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?

    Enrico Citiolo's avatar
    Enrico Citiolo 10/27/2022 3:52 PM
I could buy products with less packaging
