Some natural gifts I am grateful for are the air we breathe, bodies of water which help nourish our bodies, as well as give us a fun place to play. I am also so grateful for all the plants and animals which keep our life cycle going.

Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I definitely agree with Rachel Carson, as I feel nature has helped me grown and develop tremendously. I think just being out in the fresh air and having that connection between our ecosystem and ourselves help advance our minds and bodies.

A recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?

I think the first way to address systematic racism like the one presented would be to use your own voice to speak out about it. You can also support more minority businesses regularly, by purchasing goods and services from them instead of large chains.

    Simplicity Less Screen Time
What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

I found replacing my screentime with other activities fairly easy. I am a huge advocate for going outside and being active, so it was fun to stop staring at a screen for a little bit each day. I mostly decided to spend my time doing physical activities such as working our, or practicing yoga, as well as some form of art.

Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

    Sophie Flatt 11/12/2020 3:52 PM
I have always struggled with having a good sleep schedule and really have been trying to work on it. I find myself to be both a night owl, and an early riser, so it is difficult for me to get sufficient sleep, but I definitely have been better at going to bed earlier and getting a good night of sleep before getting up.
  • Reflection Question
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

    Sophie Flatt's avatar
    Sophie Flatt 11/12/2020 3:50 PM
Some single-use items I often use are straws, plastic baggies, and plastic cups. recently though, I have been more cautious on using metal straws, Tupperware containers, and I was bringing my own reusable cup when I would get a drink from many places, but because of Covid-19 many places will not accept it.
  • Reflection Question
    Health More Fruits and Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Sophie Flatt 11/04/2020 7:06 PM
Eating more fruits and vegetables personally makes me feel better as a whole, it keeps me energized and feeling healthy. Eating natural unprocessed veggies and fruits can help keep our planet flourishing and healthy by decreasing the use of large factory based food industries.
