In your opinion, how do social inequalities diminish a strong sense of community?

    Sarah Kalainoff's avatar
    Sarah Kalainoff 7/19/2020 10:53 AM
Communities are nonexistent when the members accept social inequalities.. Of course, the allocated geographic area where people live is still considered a "community" but people usually tend to think of their neighborhood as more than that. A community is  group of people working towards their individual goals, helping each other out of the kindness of their hearts, and working interdependently to improve the place they live. There can't be any exceptions to this rule-if you don't accept someone as a member of your community because of prejudice, bias, or your own bigotry, you're not a member of a community. You're part of a neighborhood clique.

How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

I think gratitude keeps you driven to acknowledge all the gifts the world gives you, which, in return, inspires you to spread joy to others. It's like karma in a way. The more you practice this mentality, the more simple gifts of life you'll be able to find in the everyday, and the more you'll respect the natural world and it's resources for providing them.
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

I found out from my research that businesses are mandated to recycle paper and cardboard, which I thought was cool! We can't put glass in the recycling bins, but there is a farm close by that will take any glass materials you don't want. The hardest part for me is remembering to recycle plastic bags at the grocery store! I keep all the plastic bags we end up collecting (usually from when my mom goes grocery shopping) in my room, instead of recycling them back to the grocery store> I also have a weird fascination with glass bottles, which get collected in my room as well :)

  • Reflection Question
    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

After practicing this habit, I found that I realize I get full earlier than I would when distracted. I feel more in- tune with my body and what it's telling me. It also has inspired me to cook better, more involved meals, so I can still enjoy mealtime without the distractions!
  • Reflection Question
    Simplicity Limit Social Media
Social media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?

    Sarah Kalainoff's avatar
    Sarah Kalainoff 7/19/2020 9:39 AM
I notice how much I habitually look at my phone without consciously acknowledging it! Before completing this action, I would scroll through social media in the morning for an hour to start my day, but usually it left me feeling more tired than I was before. For the past couple of days, I've been enjoying the outdoors for that hour, either doing yoga, meditating, journaling, or reading. Now after that hour, I feel refreshed and ready to start the day! :)

What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

    Sarah Kalainoff's avatar
    Sarah Kalainoff 7/19/2020 9:34 AM
I'd definitely like to spend more time reflecting on self-guided interests! I want to eventually get into the habit of researching and developing the interests that I have, and not solely the ones that are being taught at my school. Because I love mapping out and planning ideas and goals, I think I would use this reflection time to schedule lessons and find resources online that I can learn from. The hardest part would be putting the schedule into practice!
