My ecochallenge is going well! Over spring break, it was interesting to see how the challenge translated to a different environment.
  • Reflection Question
Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

I would love to preserve cucumbers as pickles.

My campus eco-challenge is going well. I now regularly bring a reusable mug to get my coffee.

I would love to do another eco-challenge when I'm not limited by the constraints of the college structure. I currently don't have any choice in energy, water, or food sources and much of my plastic waste is due to the grab-and-go dining system that it utilized by the majority of my meal plan options.

I completely agree, Zoe. While I can't avoid using some disposable containers due to the nature of the dining plan, something I try to remember to do is bring a reusable fork with me when I go to upstairs Leo's that I can then wash in my dorm. It's a little drop in the bucket, but all those plastic forks add up!
  • Reflection Question
    Energy Switch to Cold Water
What do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?

    zoe klausner's avatar
    zoe klausner 2/15/2023 6:58 PM
As a student, the price I pay to use the laundry machines stays the same price no matter what choice I make, so I personally am not saving anymore money, It would be a cool initiative though if the school lowered the price of using the washing machines when you use cold water as an incentive.
  • Reflection Question
Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?

    zoe klausner's avatar
    zoe klausner 2/13/2023 6:47 AM
Food sovereignty addresses the complexity of modern global food systems by emphasizing the power of local knowledge and community organization to meet people's needs.
  • Reflection Question
    Community Engage In Active Listening
What was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?

    zoe klausner's avatar
    zoe klausner 2/12/2023 6:11 PM
I always try and participate in active listening in my conversations. On my end, I learn more about the person's perspective. On the receiving end, it feels good to be heard.

    zoe klausner's avatar
    zoe klausner 2/08/2023 8:50 AM
I practice self care by making sure I get enough rest. On weekdays I try and be in bed by midnight.

I'm glad to hear you're getting rest! Sometimes the best part of the day is going to bed.
  • Reflection Question
    Nature Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

    zoe klausner's avatar
    zoe klausner 2/06/2023 1:22 PM
I feel called to work on the emotive aspect of ecological problems. I think that if people could more deeply connect with their feelings towards the environment, wether it be through art or some other form, we would be better off.
