Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

  • Reflection Question
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

There is not always a place to refill my reusable bottle, which can be tempting to grab a plastic bottle; but I can make this a permanent habit by 1: Getting a bigger reusable bottle so I don't run out 2: plan ahead, and know if there will be an opportunity to fill my bottle before I go somewhere.

Great plan!!  It can definitely be more convenient to use single use plastics such as plastic water bottles, but using reusable will prove to be more cost efficient and better for the Earth!  Keep up the great work!
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

Make daily goals for myself to check all of these R's off of my "list" when I accomplish each one daily.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

This does not surprise me at all, my family has probably been guilty about this in the past.  I would rather use this money for things that I could really use like textbooks, or rent.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?

Next time I cook with vegetables I will utilize every part of the vegetable.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Choose Organic Ingredients
Many people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?

That is true for right now, but we can show the world how to grow their own organic food, and make an economy out of it.

I have been feeling great about the things I have been doing, and I plan to stick with them.
