I just watched the documentary Seaspiracy last night. It was interesting to see how the film maker came to discover how sustainable fishing doesn't really exist in our world. I've come to learn the amount damage that is being done to our oceans and the extensive role the ocean plays in our environment. Although heartbreaking, I def recommend to watch!

Have you registered already? Will all your classes be on campus? I think there may still be some online options available, but I'm not sure!

Might sound like an odd question but does anyone have any tips on how to efficiently collect rainwater? I’ve tried putting buckets on my balcony but with the shade on top it doesn’t do a good job of collecting. I’ve heard rain water is excellent for indoor plants!

  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Improve a Bus Stop
In what ways can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

    Nikita Madhani 3/26/2021 6:35 PM
To be honest, I think BC has a pretty great transportation system wherein large groups of people are able to commute from one place to another with ease. With more people using transport, we're eliminating single uses of cars. Plus BC also does have a great bike rental system where you could just take a bike and leave it at the most convenient space.

I agree if we're talking about the City of Vancouver, but unfortunately transit and cycling infrastructure gets a lot worse outside of the city! It's definitely something BC can continue to improve upon.

If there's demand, we can definitely run another Ecochallenge in the Fall semester!
  • Reflection Question
    Food Meet My Local Farmers
When you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? How can knowing their food producers enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?

    Nikita Madhani's avatar
    Nikita Madhani 3/24/2021 2:42 PM
One of the largest advantage is having that connect with your food. I think once you know where your food comes from, knowing where it starts from and where its ending, creates a deeper gratification towards your food. And understanding the hard work that comes from producing your own food makes you want to advocate for those that put in the hard work that goes into growing your food. From what I've heard from the farmers is that it takes a lot of manual work and the competition with supermarkets makes it difficult when they're competing with sale prices. It's definitely challenging and would be nice if these farmers could get what they deserve!

Totally agree! Do you have any local farms that you buy from regularly?
  • Reflection Question
    Health Audit Toxic Cleaning Products
To what extent do environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?

Surprisingly a lot! Just straying away from this reflection question a little bit, not only do cleaning products have a lot of toxins in it, but so do our everyday household items such as make up, deodorants, shampoos, plastic containers, etc. Factories that create it emit a lot of harmful pollutants into the air. It's unfortunate that we are exposed to the chemicals in both ways. As cancer is one of the leading causes (I believe it is the leading cause), it's no wonder all of these products affect us a lot because many of these chemicals and pollutants are carcinogenic.

for those of you that are interested in knowing what other toxic substances there are out there here is an article by the University of California
