Mandy's Actions
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 1 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Simplicity
Go For A Daily Walk Outside
I will take a walk outside for 20 minutes each day.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 30-minute walk outside each day.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

Mandy Morrell 10/24/2019 9:50 PMTrying to add extra veggies in my day I notice gets more difficult the busier I get and the later in the week it is after getting groceries when my easily accessible veggies are gone. Some days, it looks like cutting up a cucumber when I get home from work at 10pm... so some days are harder than others! -
Reflection QuestionFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Mandy Morrell 9/27/2019 10:57 PMI think it is partially freedom of funds, but it is also being removed from animals as part of their lifestyle as a food source as people are working more service jobs and living more urban lives. Our society also has normalized through the meat industry that each meal should contain meat, when in reality, research has shown our bodies were designed to eat meat far less often, 1-2x a week. I believe this mentality is contributing to our health issues as well factory farming, which I do not believe is how God created us to live. Animals are meant for our use, not abuse and our consumption choices are tied to that, no matter what wealth we have or society we are from. It is good to take a step back and reassess our consumption patterns based on need, not just the patterns we are raised around. -
Reflection QuestionWater Brush My Teeth Without Running WaterWhat is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?
Mandy Morrell 9/15/2019 7:46 PMThe main water from here is from the Colorado River, which supplies much of the southwest and has dropped drastically as the population in the southwest has exploded in the last fifty years. Smaller reservoirs and watersheds from northern California are supplemental sources. -
Reflection QuestionNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Mandy Morrell 9/08/2019 9:48 PMI absolutely love my daily walks. I am really able to appreciate the small things along my route, the sounds and smells and stillness of the world outside of the busyness of my schedule. It reminds me that God created this world for not just us to enjoy, but all the other living things around us as well.-
Lacy Cagle (Ecochallenge.org Staff) 9/10/2019 3:33 PMI love your reflection, Mandy. I'm inspired to go on a walk right now! :)
