Hello, Team! I added an action for everyone - to perform an online energy audit of your energy usage at home/work (since they're the same thing at this time). Please let me know if it's showing up for you or not!

I'm extremely excited to be participating in the Earth Month Ecochallenge with you all. There are so many environmental justice issues in which I'm interested that I really had difficulty picking only 10 one-time actions and 10 daily actions! I wrote down the extras to work on in subsequent months. I've already made a lot of changes to help reduce my carbon footprint, and I'm excited to learn about and do even more!
  • Reflection Question
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

My kids love to take daily walks together around the neighborhood as a family. Last summer and fall, we spent the majority of at least one weekend day exploring a new hiking trail - I plan to pick this back up as the weather continues to improve.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

This year I plan to utilize windowsill gardens and patio containers and plant herbs and native plants/plants for pollinators in the raised beds my husband built for me. The windowsill gardens and patio containers will be a fun way for my kids to observe, learn and participate in this activity. By planting the herbs and veggies we plan to eat in the raised beds, we'll be able to maximize our harvest by keeping the plants out of reach from some of our neighborhood critters.
  • Reflection Question
Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

I developed a love for all things pickled during my third pregnancy. Some foods I'd like to preserve for enjoyment throughout the year will include pickled green tomatoes, pickled onions and pickled green beans. Tomatoes also grow like crazy in my backyard, so it's my goal to make and preserve tomato sauce and salsa for use later in the year.
  • Reflection Question
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
A recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?

I have the opportunity to have a pretty direct impact on this matter by proposing and supporting new product offerings which align with USBCDC's Racial Equity Agenda.
