Reflection QuestionHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Anupama Pasricha 11/18/2022 8:23 AMI chose to spend the exercise time in nature when weather permits. I hope to learn and have courage to walk outside in subzero temperatures in MN. -
Reflection QuestionEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Anupama Pasricha 11/05/2022 7:07 AMToday’s U.S. electricity system is a complex network of power plants, transmission and distribution wires, and end-users of electricity. Today, most Americans receive their electricity from centralized power plants that use a wide variety of energy resources to produce electricity, such as coal, natural gas, nuclear energy, or renewable resources such as water, wind, or solar energy. This complex system of generation, delivery, and end-users is often referred to as the electric power grid. The electricity we enjoy in Minnesota travels on transmission wires that are linked with similar wires in 14 other states and the Canadian province of Manitoba. This regional "grid" is overseen by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), a nonprofit organization based in Indiana.
MISO's primary role is to balance electricity supply and demand in the region. At MISO's operations center in Eagan, workers monitor real-time power flows on maps splashed across giant screens.
Env impacts:- Emissions of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants, especially when a fuel is burned.
- Use of water resources to produce steam, provide cooling, and serve other functions.
- Discharges of pollution into water bodies, including thermal pollution (water that is hotter than the original temperature of the water body).
- Generation of solid waste, which may include hazardous waste.
- Land use for fuel production, power generation, and transmission and distribution lines.
- Effects on plants, animals, and ecosystems that result from the air, water, waste, and land impacts above.
Some of these environmental effects can also potentially affect human health, particularly if they result in people being exposed to pollutants in air, water, or soil.
You can reduce the environmental effects of your electricity use by buying green power and by becoming more energy-efficient.

Reflection QuestionWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Anupama Pasricha 10/29/2022 6:33 AMDue to city constructions and road closure, I chose not to compost for a few days as it would have me take a longer route to get to the compost site. It became a barrier.
