Taking some time to just breathe has been super helpful to shut my mind off. Mindfulness practices help me ground myself by allowing me to focus on really feeling and experiencing the five senses.

Feeling and experiencing the five senses is the best thing in the world. It really brings you into the present moment and makes you appreciate what we're blessed for in life.

I spent some time reading about the DC Clean Rivers Project that is a part of DC Water and is the reason that there is a lot of construction going on on campus right now. As a part of this project, there is a Potomac River Tunnel Project that’s going on. The project aims to reduce the amount of combined sewage overflows (mixtures of raw sewage and rain water) into the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers and Rock Creek. CSOs harm our environment, and particularly the quality of local water, by increasing the levels of bacteria in the water, contributing to low dissolved oxygen in the water, increasing the potential for fish stress or kills and impacts on other aquatic life, and increasing the amount of trash in waterways. In an average year of rainfall, about 654 million gallons of CSOs enter the Potomac River. The plans for the Potomac River Tunnel Project aim to reduce CSOs to the Potomac River by 93% by volume and reduce their frequency from around 74 events to 4 events in an average year of rainfall. Having poor quality drinking water is linked to the transmission of diseases and poor health of those that drink the water. This initiative provides hope for a future where the water sources in our area will be significantly cleaner and healthier.

  • Reflection Question
    Community Engage In Active Listening
What was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?

    Sara Pizzini's avatar
    Sara Pizzini 3/06/2023 11:07 AM
As I'm home for spring break for a little bit, I'm around my direct family but also my extended family. With this comes some conversations about contentious topics but also about small things that I may disagree with them about. Actively listening was hard in some of the conversations where I felt like I really wanted to jump in at some points, but it made the conversation much more of a conversation and less of an argument, which it could have become.

      Diego Bigelow-Gonzalo 3/25/2023 2:24 PM
That's so great to hear - it can definitely be tough to not to voice your opinion when you feel strongly about a certain topic, but it can definitely help sometimes when you're trying to keep the interaction peaceful/amicable.

My ecochallenge is going well so far. I've been using my reusable water bottle and reusing plastic coffee cups when given them at a cafe. Also, as the weather has been getting a bit warmer recently, I've spent more time outside trying to connect with nature and cultivate a positive relationship with it.

The warm weather has been so incredible recently. Hopefully I can make it over to the cherry blossoms tomorrow :)

Great to hear! I've been using my reusable water bottle as well and I love it. I've always been outside a lot more recently and have been really trying to appreciate nature for the beauty it holds.
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

    Sara Pizzini's avatar
    Sara Pizzini 2/25/2023 1:51 PM
I can encourage others to also choose two sided printing by telling them that they will actually save some money when printing on two sides as opposed to single sided, on top of saving sheets of paper.
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Car Share
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (school, work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Sara Pizzini's avatar
    Sara Pizzini 2/12/2023 5:06 PM
When I'm at school and at home, I'll frequently opt for public transportation, not only to save money but to limit extra use of cars for transportation. If I have to drive somewhere I try to coordinate with my friends so that we can use the least amount of cars as possible.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Visit A Local Farm
How do our current food growing and manufacturing processes affect our future and the future of Earth?

    Sara Pizzini's avatar
    Sara Pizzini 2/11/2023 11:26 AM
The way that we grow food has a huge affect on the future of Earth. As our population continues to grow and food demand increases, sustainable farming is critical to ensure that we won't permanently damage the environment that gives us life.
This weekend I went home and picked mushrooms from the mushroom farm that my family lives on!!!!

  • Reflection Question
    Community SIGN UP TO VOTE
Why is voting important to creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world? In what other ways can you actively participate in important decision-making?

    Sara Pizzini's avatar
    Sara Pizzini 2/08/2023 5:33 PM
Voting is the best way to make your voice heard in our world. Some other important ways to actively participate in important decision-making is to attend local protests or write to your congresspeople, which is something that's easy to do especially in DC.

    • Mira Patel's avatar
      Mira Patel 2/21/2023 6:10 PM
I totally agree. Have you attended any local protests?

  • Sara Pizzini's avatar

My ecochallenge is going well so far. Recently I've been more conscious of trying to limit my running water usage, especially when showering and doing dishes.
  • Reflection Question
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Sara Pizzini's avatar
    Sara Pizzini 2/02/2023 11:14 AM
The large scale use of water for agriculture, damming rivers for hydroelectric energy, urban development, general pollution, and more all impact the health of our water systems both locally and globally. To improve the health of water systems, I can be conscious of what I wash down the sink/toilet. In the future, I can ensure that the home that I live in has pipes that don't have lead in them.

    • Maria Quinn's avatar
      Maria Quinn 2/02/2023 11:47 AM
These sound like great personal steps you can take, especially the lead pipes one.
