  • Reflection Question
    Community Connect with a Nonprofit
What inspires you to act toward a more sustainable community?

    julia siu 3/28/2022 10:23 AM
I am inspired to create a more sustainable community because I want a better future for the next generation.
  • Reflection Question
    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

    julia siu's avatar
    julia siu 3/28/2022 10:20 AM
I think it was nice to take a break from my phone but I ended up being overwhelmed and not enjoying my meal.
  • Reflection Question
    Simplicity Track my Purchases
What have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?

    julia siu's avatar
    julia siu 3/28/2022 8:10 AM
I have noticed that most of my purchases are food or splurge-of-the-moment purchases. I think I can change my practices by thinking more before I buy something.

I think my campus eco-challenge is going well but it has been hard to check in everyday due to a busy life
  • Reflection Question
    Water Fix Leaky Faucets
Fixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?

    julia siu's avatar

At our university, some of the showers have the option to turn the water pressure down as you shampoo, condition, etc. and I do that now or completely turn the water off when I am doing that. I have also talked to other residents about it and they have also started doing it. You aren't cutting your showers shorter and being smelly by rushing but instead turning the water off when you're not actually using it.
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Choose a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

    julia siu's avatar
    julia siu 3/12/2022 6:21 PM
I don't take that many flights anymore due to COVID but when I do buy a plane ticket, I have chosen to invest a carbon offset which makes me feel better about flying.
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Advocate for Greener Vehicles
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

I am in another class where we have to come up with a business model for a new idea and I created an idea to offer sustainable and affordable transportation for students on university/college campuses. I came up with using solar-paneled e-bikes that you are able to rent through your student card so it is included in your tuition.
  • Reflection Question
Community Join my Student Government or Local Group
How can your community support inclusive decision making?

    julia siu's avatar
    julia siu 3/12/2022 6:19 PM
I am a part of the ResLife and ASB at our university and I have had conversations with faculty and staff about how our university can include more diverse voices so that the decisions are truly making a positive impact for all people. I realize that I am also only one person and do not have every lived experience so I also push for more diverse student leadership in positions of power on our campus.
  • Reflection Question
    Community Support Native Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

    julia siu's avatar
    julia siu 3/12/2022 6:17 PM
Balance is important to sustainability because too much or too little of anything is never good for anything. I learned that Indigenous groups protect about 80% of the Earth's biodiversity and they have found that balance in nature well.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Visit A Local Farm
How do our current food growing and manufacturing processes affect our future and the future of Earth?

While in Washington, I was able to pick some of my own fruit to eat that night! I found that when you actually source locally it feels better when you eat it. Despite wanting some food out of season, it costs a lot and takes a lot of effort to get those out-of-season fruits and vegetables you want.
