Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

    Delta Sivonsay 6/23/2019 2:47 PM
I feel like the future of our marine life/oceans is a specific area I was called to work on. Living in San Diego is a constant reminder of how beautiful the ocean is and how much work we as a community have when it comes to the future of our marine life/oceans. I feel that I can do my part with addressing the enormity of ecological problems we face when it comes to this specific area given that I live so close to the ocean.

    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Delta Sivonsay 6/23/2019 2:35 AM
I am able to build a better and stronger relationship with my son. I am able to enjoy my meals and spend less time at the table since there are no distractions.

Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this idea?

    Delta Sivonsay 6/23/2019 2:27 AM
I think this quote makes a great point. It’s like the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctors away”, meaning that it is better to take care of your health by eating healthy versus paying a visit to a doctor which is typically more expensive. In addition, we should spend money on how are foods are being produce versus paying a hospital bill.

How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?

    Delta Sivonsay 6/23/2019 2:23 AM
Thinking creatively helps us address big systems problems differently by bringing a new way or perhaps maybe a fun way of tackling a issue and thus resolving it.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Delta Sivonsay 6/23/2019 2:20 AM
What we do with our trash and how we dispose of it is what concerns me the most about how we are affecting the planet. I throw away my garbage but I never really think about what happens after the trash is on its way to the dump.  It is scary to think about the worlds population increasing dramatically and that also means the amount of trash on this planet.

How do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?

    Delta Sivonsay 6/23/2019 2:10 AM
To deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face is taking a step back to understand my emotions and not reacting to everything that happens in life. I find it helpful to vent to others because it is not good to keep things bottled in. How I help others cope is to be an active listener and showing I care.
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Car Share
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (school, work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Delta Sivonsay 6/18/2019 6:56 PM
Yes, I could see myself sharing rides when I go to work with my coworker who lives near me as well as going to the store once a week. Work days would be Tuesdays and Thursdays. And I typically like to do my shopping on Sundays.

    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Delta Sivonsay 6/18/2019 6:54 PM
Yes, this rings true for me. I believe the beauty and mysteries of the natural world are necessary for our spiritual and emotional development. It allows one to take a step back from society and truly appreciate life itself. The implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors is that they are sheltered and lack openness.

How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Delta Sivonsay 6/14/2019 12:12 AM
In order to incorporate other personal values into my exercise routine, I plan to set up a day to hike where I can spend time with not only my son but my friends as well. I love mother nature so this will be a huge plus for me because I am exercising as well as incorporating my personal values.

How might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?

    Delta Sivonsay 6/13/2019 11:58 PM
Spending more time outdoors enhances my sense of place by reminding myself that the little things matter. Such as looking at a field of wildflowers growing on a side of the mountain and the slight breeze running through my hair as the sun kisses my skin. I didn't realize how beautiful this world was until I actually spent more time outdoors. It is nice to know that I am blessed to live in California where it is always sunny but not too hot.
