Jack Stocker 2/13/2023 4:45 PMI've noticed that checking in on ecochallenge every day has made me more thoughtful about a number of my day-to-day activities, and I have been more consciously trying to do things that are sustainable or healthy every day.-
Diego Bigelow-Gonzalo 2/19/2023 11:22 AMThat's so cool! I'm glad to hear that, and I've felt the same way!

Reflection QuestionFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Jack Stocker 2/03/2023 6:09 PMMeat is expensive! And realistically, it should be more expensive than it is. The production of meat requires an incredible amount of resources constantly going into raising livestock. Since only a fraction of the nutrition from plant-based animal feed actually goes into the meat that people eat, industrial meat production is a very inefficient way of creating food. The agricultural strain put on the land just to produce feed is intense; if every person went vegetarian, a land area the size of both North and South America combined would be freed up. This land use devastates ecosystems around the world, and is a huge environmental problem in general.-
Diego Bigelow-Gonzalo 2/19/2023 11:26 AMYo, I had no idea! I had always heard that meat production was very intensive, but I never knew the scope of which this was the case! Freeing up land the size of both south and north america?! Jeez!!! That definitely makes the case for everyone going vegetarian ASAP -
Marguerite Saunders 2/06/2023 6:02 AMThanks for sharing this, Jack. Industrial livestock farming is definitely very resource-intensive and you're right that the price of meat doesn't fully capture its environmental impacts or true cost. I was surprised to learn that meat and dairy production are heavily subsidized by the U.S. government -- $38 bn. in 2020 (this is 63% of total U.S. agriculture subsidies).

Reflection QuestionSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Jack Stocker 1/29/2023 8:10 PMAlready, meditating more often has changed the time I have to focus on myself and mindfulness - however, I would love to invest more time in reflecting on spirituality and our place in the environment. I have already begun to try and start doing this over the past week, but I think I need to spend more time in meditation to give these topics the attention they deserve. -
Reflection QuestionNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Jack Stocker 1/21/2023 11:01 AMJust taking a walk allows you to get up close to all of the life that is outside that you don't really stop to notice most of the time. Usually when walking, it is so easy to get caught up in needing to be somewhere that you don't take account of where you are or what's going on around you. Setting aside time to walk just for the sake of it really allows you to be more present. -
Jack Stocker 1/14/2023 1:12 PMToday, I went out to Rock Creek with someone I know and participated in an invasive species cleanup for a few hours - it was a great way to both get some time outside and give back to our community.-
Diego Bigelow-Gonzalo 3/25/2023 1:07 PMRock Creek is such a beautiful spot!! I actually live next to a lake in Maryland that connects to the Rock Creek trails!!!
