I took my mom to buy kombucha today from Living Tea Kombucha in Oceanside. We tried all their flavors and once we settled on the flavors we wanted we were asked in what container we would like our kombucha in. The first option was to use a recyclable plastic cup with a paper straw, the second option was to purchase a glass container for a dollar more, and the third option was to bring you own cup. Well since it was a last minute trip I didn't have a container so I opted for the glass container. It was two dollars more for our drinks but I was glad with my choice because that means that two less cups are being used. As a perk of purchasing a glass container you get a discount if you come back and get a refill in that same bottle which is pretty cool.

I am ready for new challenges I think so far I have been doing very good. The weather is warming up so it has been nice walking outside which is one of my challenges this round.

I have narrowed down the type of reusable straw I want to buy I think this will help a lot in reducing the amount of straws I use. These challenges have been a topic of conversation for a lot of my conversations lately. I think that is pretty cool because in a small way it is raising awareness of our current climate change.

My challenge is going very well I am able to remind myself to check in on my challenges. I have been able to keep up with my previous challenges as well and I am very proud of myself. It is hard to start something new and integrated into my daily routine but I am trying and that is what counts.
  • Reflection Question
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

    Vielka Tovar 6/05/2019 4:33 PM
Our brain is a very powerful thing and positive thinking can change your mood which then transfers to your  actions. When you are happy or in a good mood you are not thinking about negative things. Reminding myself to be thankful and grateful motivates me to volunteer and help those around me. When you forget about certain commodities it is easy to take them for granted. A attitude of  gratitude makes you want to do good for yourself and others.
  • Reflection Question
Simplicity Go for a Daily Walk
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

    Vielka Tovar 6/04/2019 10:12 PM
Walking and simply just being outdoors is a stress reliever. Being mindful when taking these walks is a great benefit to my mind and body.

I came to Nevada to visit family and to celebrate a birthday this weekend. It was really easy to complete the daily walk challenge I just didn't check in for the past few days :(.
  • Reflection Question
Simplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

    Vielka Tovar 5/15/2019 6:39 PM
    Not purchasing unnecessary items.

    • Leah Young 5/24/2019 9:01 PM
It's difficult to follow through with this one, isn't it?  As part of my challenge to track my spending, I've been trying to purchase only items I NEED, but it takes a conscious and continuous effort!
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

    Vielka Tovar 5/14/2019 10:39 PM
Knowing that my very small steps actually make a difference it is a motivator and it encourages me to keep going. Also, getting my family and friends involved make it easier because now I can explain to them how little steps equal big change.
  • Reflection Question
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

    Vielka Tovar 5/14/2019 10:38 PM
A barrier I can think of which happens a lot to me is forgetting my water bottle and having to purchase a plastic bottle instead. The way I have tried to avoid this is by having multiple reusable water bottles in my car and my house.

    • Mandy Morrell 5/15/2019 10:53 PM
Thats my struggle too - keeping one in my car - Ill take them in to wash them and forget to bring the other back out! But keeping multiple in my car is a great idea! Thanks!
