I walked to the tidal basin today to see the cherry blossoms. I definitely recommend going some time this week for anyone interested! It's a great way to get outside and take time away from school.

I went the other day and they're so beautiful! My prof is actually having class at the Tidal Basin tomorrow, so I can't wait for that!

    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Clara Weller's avatar
    Clara Weller 3/24/2023 8:07 AM
While I've heard of most of these R's to live a more sustainable lifestyle, I've never included refuse. I think refusing a plastic straw or container instead of just using it or accepting it is an important step that needs to be taken to reach sustainability. While it may be annoying to bring a reusable mug or sip from a cup, it is necessary to initiate a sustainable lifestyle.

I also haven't heard about the other R's. One that stands out to me is repurpose. In my own life, I've been trying to apply it to cooking. Something I've been trying to do more frequently is repurpose old boxes/jars/food containers . I've also been trying to repurpose leftovers to make sure that I'm minimizing food waste.

Incorporating the "R's" into our lifestyle is so essential. In fact, I remember when it used to be called the "Three R's: Reduce, reuse, recycle," but it's cool to see that it's expanded to include other terminology. Reusable water bottles are such a simple way to conserve plastic, and is something that everyone should be doing nowadays!

Its crazy to me how often napkins or utensils or straws or all this other superfluous stuff is thrown at people at restaurants etc. I would bet by refusing even half that stuff throughout the course of a year you would have an impressive reduction in waste
  • Reflection Question
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    Clara Weller's avatar
    Clara Weller 3/23/2023 9:52 AM
A barrier to using a reusable water bottle is carrying it around everywhere. If I don't have room in my bag or am not carrying a bag, I'll forget to bring my water bottle. I think prioritizing a reusable water bottle when I leave the house or finding tap water sources would be a way to get around this.
  • Reflection Question
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Clara Weller's avatar
    Clara Weller 3/22/2023 12:51 PM
I find that running outside is a great way to move your body and enjoy time outside and in the sun. Running with friends or friends biking next to you is another way to incorporate a personal value.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Clara Weller's avatar
    Clara Weller 3/22/2023 12:48 PM
It takes a lot of energy, water, food and land to keep livestock and produce meat. Eating more meat contributes to a crippling planet because it exhausts these water, energy, and food systems. Additionally, cows produce a lot of methane, a greenhouse gas 50 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

    • Diego Bigelow-Gonzalo's avatar
      Diego Bigelow-Gonzalo 3/25/2023 3:51 PM
That's facts. I used to not consider why eating meats was so bad for the environment, but after doing some research into it it's easy to see why it's so exhausting for our natural environment.
  • Reflection Question
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Clara Weller's avatar
    Clara Weller 3/22/2023 12:44 PM
After a quick google search, I found Georgetown gets 2/3 of its electricity from solar power. This is impressive to me, since I can imagine it takes a lot of electricity to run campus. Even though a lot of Georgetown's electricity comes from renewables, I still think its important to conserve energy and turn appliances off when they're not being used.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Whole Food Lifestyle
Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?

I think this means the food we eat is extremely important for our well being and health. Eating whole and unprocessed foods will not only make you feel better, but it is also more sustainable and better for the environment.
