An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

  • Reflection Question
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

If I bring in a bag that I am not able to use, then I just put the things in the cart and then roll it to my car and bag the stuff into my reusable bag outside of the store. This happened during COVID where people weren't allowed to bring in their own bags, and this is what I started doing.

it is going great! a great reminder is to turn off all lights and unplug all things you are not using before leaving the house, even things unused are still taking electricity by just being plugged in!
  • Reflection Question
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I try not to use any, but things I buy from the grocery are sometimes in plastic. The best way to avoid this is to shop at grocery stores that don't use that kind of packaging, or to think about what you are buying before you do so!
