Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

  • Reflection Question
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

    Cari Witherow 11/14/2018 12:49 PM
It makes me realize that I'm lucky to be in a position where I can help make changes, and I should take advantage of that.
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Cari Witherow 11/14/2018 10:39 AM
Reduce - Buy more whole, unpackaged food and reduce the waste I generate.
Reuse - Bring my own tupperware to restaurants and reuse it instead of taking more every time I get leftovers.
Refuse - Don't take a bag when buying one small item (or bring my own!).
Repair - Get clothes with holes repaired instead of buying new!
Repurpose - Use old containers or jars for plant holders or candles instead of buying new things.
  • Reflection Question
    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Cari Witherow 11/14/2018 10:36 AM
It was nice to have a little breather from always doing something on my laptop or phone, plus they weren't in the way getting spilled on. I'm usually pretty busy so I don't often have time to cook and eat and take a break from everything, but this is a nice way to combine some of those.
  • Reflection Question
    Health More Fruits and Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Cari Witherow 11/11/2018 7:30 PM
I think that the convenience of meat, and our separation from the process of it being produced contribute to us eating a lot more of it. I think that Meatless Monday is a good way to start, and eventually reducing it from a daily food into a delicacy that people eat much less often.
  • Reflection Question
Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

    Cari Witherow 11/11/2018 7:27 PM
Weird idea, but I would definitely try pickling radish. I had some pickled radish at a Korean restaurant and it was wonderful, especially because I can't say I've ever enjoyed radish. I would love to try making this at home, although I know it won't be as good.

Got a reusable cup from Starbucks yesterday (and got 50 cents off my drink today)!  I already feel very obnoxious carrying it around, but it feels good knowing that I'm not using a disposable cup every time I go. I'm also thinking about making some kind of cup sleeve, because the cup still gets hot and I don't want to continue using the disposable drink sleeves. Additionally, this cup is not exclusively for use at Starbucks, so I have a nice reusable cup if I want to make hot drinks at home.
