Pollution has been a big problem for many years and the guilt should fall on humans. A fact I read about stated that at least half of our rivers and one-third of our lakes are polluted. It also stated that these living conditions are unfit for both fish and other animals living near or in the lake. We can help by being more cautious about where we put our trash, or if we see any on the ground, pick it up. I also read that using garbage disposals or pouring foods or other unwanted things down the drain can cause harm as well.

Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

Ever since the dinner on campus was moved outside, I realized how many water bottles, plastic bags, and containers are used every day. I started reflecting on myself, and I realized I was getting at least 2 or 3 water bottles from the dining center every day. From now on, I am going to make sure I bring my own water bottle so I can cut down on the amount of plastic I am wasting.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?

One of my favorite times of the year is definitely Halloween because of pumpkins. I love everything about the flavor, and I usually am always making some kind of meals or drinks with this flavor. So I was thinking about how I could use almost all of the pumpkin instead of only certain parts. So when it gets closer to Halloween I am going to try and cook something with the insides of the pumpkin, the pumpkin seeds, and then after I can carve the pumpkin for Halloween with my family. This way I am not just throwing away everything inside the pumpkin and being wasteful.
