    Waste Launch a Recycling Program
How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?

    Lindsey Lyons 10/14/2018 5:45 PM
Big system problems can be overwhelming to address. You have to be creative to find solutions that work for all stakeholders and still create the positive outcome desired. Creative solutions are often more attractive and better accepted, which helps move the needed changes along.

    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I am a coffee on the go gal. I know I need to do better at keeping a mug with me, but my long commute to work takes me by coffee drive throughs were BYO mugs are hard to use. I need to do better here!!! I wish there was more incentives and discounts at store to help keep me motivated.

Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    Jinnie Monismith 10/10/2018 6:51 PM
Barriers:  Many people do not understand the effects of their actions, including the use of single-use plastics like water bottles.  Also, many would opt to use-and-trash rather than use-and-clean.

Success:  Show people images of what happens when the world uses single-use plastics to combat the "out of site, out of mind" mentality.  Incentives help too!

My challenge is going great. Having a hard time with the personal waste audit-- it's a balance between home and work. I have enjoyed the challenges to eat better, and haven't really bought anything except food (even for my kids) since the challenge started.

    Simplicity Limit Social Media
Social media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also take more time than we realize or intend to give. After doing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?

    Lindsey Lyons 10/09/2018 6:17 AM
I love my phone. However, we have gone device free in the evenings at home on school nights. It's been great. Meals and home, paired with no devices and a dog walk after dinner have really cleared the ming. Challenge is... It's getting dark so early. It's a lot to pack in after a long day at work.

    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

This indian summer weather has been awesome. Bike to boats this weekend, yard work/leaf raking, walk with my kids, bonfire with friends.... It's been great to be outside and enjoy the leaves starting to change.

    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this idea?

    Lindsey Lyons 10/09/2018 6:13 AM
It's easiest for me to do this at breakfast. Fruit and nuts have been the option this week!

Gathering ideas about single use plastic reduction at AASHE. Let’s work to build the BYO culture at Dickinson. What obstacles remain?

At the AASHE conference picking up tons of good tips and tricks. Good vegetarian lunch too!
