  • Reflection Question
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

    Elizabeth Ensslin 10/15/2018 8:59 PM
Going paperless is obviously great for the environment, but it's also actually so much easier. Trying to ensure that documents are transferred online instead of filing papers (that may end up getting lost anyway) helps me to keep track of finances, bills, subscriptions, etc. I also got my mom to unsubscribe from 2 magazines that she receives in the mail, but are online - she's already cutting down on her environmental impact, too!
  • Reflection Question
    Energy Online Energy Audit
What most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint?

    Elizabeth Ensslin 10/15/2018 8:59 PM
I'm participating in an online research audit on campus, and I think I'll be surprised by how much electricity I use. You don't really think often about how many things are always plugged in at the same time, so it will be interesting to see if I can cause a significant decrease in my consumption.
  • Reflection Question
    Nature Do Nature Activities
What did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and touch?

    lauren fordyce 10/15/2018 8:28 PM
I got to hear the birds and learn how to identify what each bird was. I got to get my feet dirty and feel the earth. I got to smell the pine trees and feel the cool breeze of fall coming.
  • Reflection Question
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    lauren fordyce 10/15/2018 8:26 PM
you get to interact and take it all in. driving by is too quick to learn and enjoy everything in your town
  • Reflection Question
    Community Meet My Neighbors
In what ways can you create more real, face-to-face interactions with friends — or strangers — each week?

    lauren fordyce 10/15/2018 8:25 PM
Going to events without all of your friends, having a cell phone free meal together, and going for walks or hikes.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Meet My Local Farmers
When you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? Do you think this might enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?

    Elizabeth Ensslin 10/15/2018 8:15 PM
Knowing who produces your food can be extremely influential — having a personal connection to food allows you to enjoy and appreciate food more because you're more aware of the effort that went into producing your meal.
  • Reflection Question
    Health Take Control
How do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?

    Elizabeth Ensslin 10/15/2018 8:14 PM
Being good to yourself mentally can also help community and environmental health because feeling happier can lead to doing good for others!

  • Elizabeth Ensslin 10/15/2018 8:12 PM
It's been really incredible to see how much of an impact someone can make by simply being more conscious of the decisions that you make during the day. Not making any waste is pretty easy to do on campus — dining in the caf or places where plates are used is an easy way to have no food trash, and being conscious about other wrapped items also allows you to have no trash.

    Waste Launch a Recycling Program
How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?

    lauren fordyce 10/15/2018 8:03 PM
you have to make recycling and behavior change fun. people need something that will get them to think differently and get outside of the box. i am currently working on more creative ways to get people thinking about their waste,.
