Society has a culture of complexity and overuse. To practice simplicity, one has to creatively find ways and navigate the complexity.

    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

I chose to spend the exercise time in nature when weather permits. I hope to learn and have courage to walk outside in subzero temperatures in MN.

Simplicity Go For A Daily Walk Outside
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

It helps me realize that there is more than just what I am stuck thinking about. Whether it is school or family or friends, being outside helps me relax and remind myself to not take things for granted.

    Health Practice Loving-Kindness Meditation
How can practicing Loving-Kindness Meditation be helpful to the health of the environment?

Practicing meditation allows me to be more present in the environment that I live in. If everyone practiced daily meditation we might see the way we interact with our environment change. People might be more likely to treat the earth with kindness if they practice meditation and mindfulness.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

Many Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck so as well as helping the environment it would help with rent and utilities.
  • Reflection Question
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

I would like to shift my sleep patterns by allocating my productivity during the day. This can be done by doing classwork in between classes and not "wasting" time doing something unproductive in the evenings to pave the way for longer sleep. I am finding that I am more present in my classes, can focus better, and have an overall more positive attitude.
  • Reflection Question
    Nature Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

I believe that when there is time for self-reflection we can feel more spiritually connected to whichever belief we have. Looking at the sunset made me take a moment to appreciate my environment just a little more. Makes me think of the appreciation I have for myself and what I have accomplished in my day.

    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

I will refuse, when possible, the convenience plastics such as coffee lids, produce bags, stir sticks and shopping bags. I like to shop my own closet to find new trends in my closet. (trends are cyclical) When I need to buy clothing items for myself or children I will always check the thrift stores first. I love a shared economy of goods. I usually will check in with friends and family when appropriate before buying somethings such as rugs, curtains, decor.  I take great pleasure in giving things second life!
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I have bags stuffed in the car and hanging on the door handle leaving my house. If I am without a bag, I will request paper and if I must, I will use plastic. I do everything I can to avoid it though. Having a reusable bag handy and in a convenient place helps me to use them frequently.
