Moshe's actions
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 30 minute(s)
Simplicity
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, neighbors or classmates.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Food
Locally-Sourced Meals
I will source 1 meal(s) each day from local producers.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Moshe Abramovitz 4/30/2024 9:16 AMBetter now that I figured out what I have been doing wrong this whole time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Online Energy AuditWhat most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint? What changes did you make or will you make?
Moshe Abramovitz 4/30/2024 9:12 AMI use power pretty sparingly. I only turn on the lights when nessisary. I keep my house like a cave I must have been a cave dweller in another life. I really only use the TV for extended periods of time and it's a very energy efficient model. I don't open the refrigerator much and I keep it organized so I know exactly what I am looking for. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Moshe Abramovitz 4/30/2024 9:07 AMI don't do straws especially the paper ones. The only think those are possibly good for is snorting coke. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Moshe Abramovitz 4/30/2024 9:06 AMYou know what they say if it's yellow let it mellow. The only time this is a problem is if there are women in the household some of them use a ton of toilet paper. Then you must flush unless you like plunging toilets. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Moshe Abramovitz 4/30/2024 9:04 AMSome people shower everyday. I personally don't unless I have been sweating a whole bunch or have done something that you really get dirty. I shower typically every other day. I only spend 5 minutes of less running the water, sort of like some public showers you have to push a button and it only stays on for so long. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Moshe Abramovitz 4/30/2024 9:01 AMUnfortunately the majority of items that are recyclable in our area are not. I don't have to think much about recycling cause we have our on-site manager sort the items we put into recycling bins. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Moshe Abramovitz 4/30/2024 8:58 AMFortunately I live in a complex that has an exterior bin for compostable materials so I don't need to stink up my house. Makes it easy and makes it clean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Moshe Abramovitz 4/30/2024 8:56 AMI usually hate social media. I have refrained from posting my gripes about the world today. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Moshe Abramovitz 4/30/2024 8:55 AMBeen doing this for a while. But as I sit here as an cripple I really just want to be able to walk. But given this time I reflect on what people really need food, shelter, and safety. Given high prices I really don't need to spend money on anything else other than the necessities. Good for the planet good for my pocketbook. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Support a Sharing EconomyWhat are some of the barriers to sharing economies? What is your plan for supporting or creating one in your community?
Moshe Abramovitz 4/30/2024 8:51 AMGave away some Items I no longer use on Craigslist. Keeping stuff out of the land fills.
