  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Simplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future?

    Amelia Allen's avatar
    Amelia Allen 12/11/2023 7:40 AM
In the future I can more mindfully access wants vs needs and I can also continue to donate old things and clean up my desk/makeup after I use it so it doesn't get all crowded like it normally is.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

    Amelia Allen 11/29/2023 6:10 AM
I think this is an interesting quote to think about next time I watch the sun set or rise, and I like the talk of celebration and connection with the Earth.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Amelia Allen's avatar
    Amelia Allen 11/27/2023 6:46 AM
I try to use reusable metal straws as often as I can and try to replace plastic grocery bags with reusable ones that we have and paper bags if really needed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?

    Amelia Allen's avatar
    Amelia Allen 11/21/2023 10:03 AM
It addresses these transitions by stating the right for people to continue the practice of agriculture in a culture way in order to work with mother earth instead of against.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Use Reusable Bottles
What are some of the needs that water meets or benefits that water provides for you?

    Amelia Allen's avatar
    Amelia Allen 11/21/2023 6:00 AM
Water hydrates me and keeps me alive. Water is life for everything.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?

    Amelia Allen's avatar
    Amelia Allen 11/20/2023 2:16 PM
Lack of access to healthy foods can cause a build up of issues with the body including higher risk for chronic health conditions like diabetes , obesity, heart disease, mental health disorders etc. Having access to a balanced diet is definitely something to be grateful for since those people tend to be healthier which makes exercise and fighting sicknesses easier.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Amelia Allen's avatar
    Amelia Allen 11/20/2023 1:53 PM
My exercise time can be more personal by going to play soccer with my friend, or going to the gym with my mom in the afternoon.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Amelia Allen's avatar
    Amelia Allen 11/19/2023 9:55 AM
Studies from UNC Chapel Hill have said that the black communities in southwestern parts of Asheville are the most environmentally impacted by hazardous waste and landfills.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Amelia Allen's avatar
    Amelia Allen 11/19/2023 9:06 AM
In Asheville and the surrounding areas there are many places to drop off uncommon waste like Buncombe county landfill, Buncombe county transfer station, Biltmore Iron and Metal company, and many other big chain stores like Best Buy, Home Depot and Staples.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Amelia Allen's avatar
    Amelia Allen 11/15/2023 8:10 AM
Electricity in my neighborhood just comes from power plants but specifically Duke energy.
