Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 4 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 20 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 10-minute walk outside each day.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Water
Use Reusable Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or organize car sharing with my neighbors or classmates to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Use Reusable BottlesWhat are some of the needs that water meets or benefits that water provides for you?
Stele Beane 12/12/2023 8:07 PMI get bad headaches and water often helps with those. I also drink water if I am bored or stressed, so its kind of like a stress reliever for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Stele Beane 12/12/2023 8:05 PMStart by turning off all the lights in rooms you are not in or when you leave the house. My house has solar panels so that is a very sufficient way to save energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Stele Beane 12/12/2023 8:03 PMNo, this doesn't surprise me because Americans are wasteful. If I had that money I would put it in a savings account for college a house and maybe a car one day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Stele Beane 12/12/2023 7:58 PMYou hear a lot more and get places slower, but sometimes its more peaceful, but it can also be more stressful sometimes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?
Stele Beane 11/21/2023 9:57 AMIt addresses the transition by acknowledging it and adapting to it so that it seems as normal as possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITESIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Stele Beane 11/16/2023 9:52 AMNeighborhoods and areas that have less money are more affected by the locations of waste sites and these people with less money typically live there because no one wants to pay to live next to waste sites so the housing is normally cheaper. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Stele Beane 11/16/2023 9:50 AMThey are few in Asheville. I would guess that we actually have more than most town though because we are a very environmentally friendly town. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Stele Beane 11/08/2023 9:50 AMBecause the happier you are the more you want to help people be happy too. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Car ShareTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (school, work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Stele Beane 11/07/2023 9:53 AMMost of the time I ride to school with my neighbors or they ride to school with me.
