Alexander's actions
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 3 disposable cups to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Transportation
Share Rides with Others
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or coordinate ride shares with roommates, classmates, or campus peers to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise or Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 per day.
Food
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 3 meatless meals and/or 3 vegan meals each day.
Simplicity
Reflect on My Needs Versus Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Food
Follow a Whole Food Diet
Processed foods can be less nutritious for our bodies and take more energy and water to produce, which can create more waste, pollution, and may offer fewer health benefits. I will enjoy 1 meals per day free of processed foods.
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk each day to clear my mind, get some fresh air, and support my physical and mental health as a student.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Alexander Beckley 101 10/28/2025 10:02 AMWhen we are trying to turn a complicated issue into a simple solution, we have to think outside the box and use our imagination to break barriers in order to find an easier solution. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Alexander Beckley 101 10/28/2025 10:01 AMAfter taking a walk for the past few days before the sun sets, it has affected me by allowing me to feel more relaxed and connected with the world. This has, in turn, made it much easier to focus on important tasks such as schoolwork. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
Alexander Beckley 101 10/28/2025 9:59 AMI think that his assertion is very relatable. I believe that by watching the beauty that the earth gives you, it allows you to feel a deeper and more connected relationship with the world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterDo you know where your campus or community gets its water? If not, how could you find out?
Alexander Beckley 101 10/28/2025 9:58 AMI do not know where the campus gets its water from. If I wanted to find out where they get it from, I'm sure a quick Google search would tell me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat stands in your way of making a reusable mug part of your campus routine? How can you set yourself up for success?
Alexander Beckley 101 10/28/2025 9:57 AMThe only thing that stands in my way of using a reusable cup on campus is my laziness. I can set myself up to use this cup by making it a priority in the morning to fill up and bring the cup with me every day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?
Alexander Beckley 101 10/28/2025 9:47 AMI believe that their statement is true. The more you pay for higher, nutrient-dense foods, the healthier you will become, which will help you stay away from having to visit the doctor as much. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow was your experience intentionally trying to eat less meat?
Alexander Beckley 101 10/28/2025 9:46 AMI am a big fan of eating meat, as that was how I was raised. However, after trying to reduce my intake of it, I have grown to like new foods such as asparagus and green beans. Overall, I would rate my experience a 3/5 because I have been able to try new foods I used to not like, but it is also not as good as eating meat regularly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Alexander Beckley 101 10/28/2025 9:43 AMTo ensure that I am saving energy and reducing my environmental footprint, I can do many things, such as powering off devices once I am done with them, charging appliances for the appropriate times, and lastly turning off lights when I am not using them.
