It‘s going great. I am starting to have a set routine rather than trying to accomplish my daily challenges

So far I am still enjoying the challenge. I learned how to compost, am more active and just act more responsible in regards of sustainability. I definitely want to continue many of my daily challenges after this program is finished.

Same here! I'm definitely going to continue to limit my social media usage and make sure to go on at least one daily walk after this challenge. Is there anything in particular you are going to keep up?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Leo Blassdoerfer's avatar
    Leo Blassdoerfer 10/17/2023 6:47 PM
A good way to combine personal values and exercise is to find things that are enjoyable and physical demanding. Examples would be to go for a hike with your friends, play a team sport like volleyball, basketball, football,… , go for a swim or surf session in the ocean, or even go our partying and dance with your friends. Overall it is not really important what kind of activity you do as long as you move your body and have a good time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

    Leo Blassdoerfer's avatar
    Leo Blassdoerfer 10/17/2023 6:43 PM
Overall I try to avoid single-use plastic items as much as possible. I always carry around my water bottle, pack lunches for university and try to switch to reusable options when possible. Non the less I am of course not perfect and buy single use items like coffee cups, straws, takeout containers or plastic food packaging from time to time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Use Public Transit
The US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and just 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not? How would you adjust them if you could?

    Leo Blassdoerfer's avatar
    Leo Blassdoerfer 10/17/2023 6:37 PM
I think it is really sad that only 2% go to education while 20% go to Defense. As a European I don’t understand how a country is so focused on their military while having many deficiencies within their own country. Of course Defense is important and I understand that the US position in our world as a superpower is routed deeply in its military power, but a government should provide more than just safety to their people. A good education, developed infrastructure (public transportation option included) and health care are in my opinion basic requirements for a highly developed country nowadays, as they provide the foundation for a good living environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Leo Blassdoerfer's avatar
    Leo Blassdoerfer 10/16/2023 6:55 PM
I think people in richer countries eat more meat since it is cheap and easy accessible due to the mass production of meat. Therefore, they can consume more then people from poorer countries, which often still get their meat from small farmers.
Eating a lot of meat effects our planet negatively, since it needs a lot of water and resources to be produced. Because of this, switching to a vegetarian or vegan diet is a more sustainable way of eating.

So true! Even if everyone chose to eat meat less often, like a few times a week, it would make a huge difference on our planet. I wish I could convince my family to eat meat less than once a day.
