Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

    Dakota Brinker's avatar
    Dakota Brinker 4/09/2025 4:48 PM
Determining if flying is really necessary for the destination I am going to, I also found that spending the gas money is less than the flight would be. To avoid air travel, I usually like to visit places closer to home or only fly when going international.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
How might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?

    Dakota Brinker's avatar
    Dakota Brinker 4/09/2025 4:45 PM
Spending more time outdoors can significantly boost brainpower by reducing stress and mental fatigue, enhancing creativity, improving focus and attention, promoting physical activity, and increasing Vitamin D.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?

    Dakota Brinker's avatar
    Dakota Brinker 4/09/2025 4:43 PM
health impacts (chronic diseases and malnutrition), economic costs (high healthcare costs and lost productivity), and social and psychological effects (social inequality and food insecurity). Benefits-> improved health (stronger immune system), economic stability and growth (healthier workforce and local food economies), and social equity (reduced inequality and building connections).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health
What environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?

    Dakota Brinker's avatar
    Dakota Brinker 4/09/2025 4:40 PM
Air quality: Long-term exposure to poor air quality can lead to respiratory issues like asthma, bronchitis, and other chronic lung conditions
Water quality: Contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals, and bacteria can find their way into the water supply, leading to gastrointestinal issues, skin rashes, and long-term health risks
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health
How do you practice self care?

    Dakota Brinker's avatar
    Dakota Brinker 4/09/2025 4:38 PM
I often take mental breaks to recharge so I can avoid burning out or overloading myself with things to do. I like to take naps quite often to gain my energy back or get away from a bad thought.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?

    Dakota Brinker's avatar
    Dakota Brinker 4/09/2025 4:35 PM
York City's primary water sources are the South Branch and East Branch of Codorus Creek. This water is collected in 2 reservoirs, Lake Williams and Lake Redman.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Dakota Brinker's avatar
    Dakota Brinker 4/09/2025 4:33 PM
Locally: urban runoff, overuse of water, agricultural practices, improper waste disposal
Globally: plastic pollution, industrial waste, climate change, overfishing, and habitat destruction
How to improve: use fewer chemicals, pick up litter, buy less-choose well, and advocate for better water policies
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

    Dakota Brinker's avatar
    Dakota Brinker 4/09/2025 4:25 PM
We rarely see the labor conditions behind our clothes, the environmental toll of growing, producing, and transporting goods, and a lot of people don't know where our trash actually ends up. 'Out of sight, out of mind.' Awareness creates compassion and leads to more mindful consumption that may suede your use of certain items
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

    Dakota Brinker's avatar
    Dakota Brinker 4/09/2025 4:21 PM
Strawberries, peaches, cherries, and apples because I can make jams, mix the items for desserts, or make a type of butter with the preservatives.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

    Dakota Brinker's avatar
    Dakota Brinker 4/09/2025 4:18 PM
Simplicity often means fewer resources, which could involve money, time, or stuff. Creativity is turning leftovers into a good meal or repurposing a container or jar into a vase.
