Makenzie's actions

Food

Weekly Meal Planning

I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Prevent Recycling Contamination

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use Reusable Bags

If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

Take Control

Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Use Reusable Bottles

I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

2/18/25: Was somebody going to tell me that carrying 6 reusable bags 1.5 miles home is way easier on my body than using paper? I have mobility issues with my joints and often have to carry bags weirdly so I don't slip my joints out of place; The reusable bags were able to handle a lot more strain than plastic or paper, although I think I will invest in some thicker-strapped bags for even better support. I've been using reusable bags the past few weeks, but found carrying the bags awkward and a little embarrassing. I usually do small shopping trips to be able to carry things home, but there was enough difference with the cloth bags that I may be able to do more large order trips.

This!!! The ease of carrying these are way better. Trader Joe’s bags have the best support.

2/12/25: I have convinced my boyfriend to use a Bottle Drop bag at his apartment 🙌 He was skeptical because Washington doesn't have a Bottle Drop program. We researched and talked about what he can put in there, and it led to a longer conversation about what can and can't be recycled. He's pretty Type A and get scared that he'll get in trouble if he doesn't recycle lately so I have officially created a new recycling warrior. It's very exciting!

I have not kept up with logging my challenges here at all, but I have amazing news! My ecochallenge has been organizing my trash rooms recycle out from the trash and keeping our trash going down the chute instead of on the floor. I have only cleaned it twice, the first time took me an hour and the second ten minutes! I think my floor is picking up on the kind of organization is needed to correctly recycle. One guess is that they think the building staff is doing it and want to not be a nuisance, or they just actually needed to be shown what to do! Either way I think people are inspired!

For my daily challenges I have been using only double sided paper and using a reusable bottle wherever I can, and if I use plastic or cans I am carrying them around with me the entire day. This way I am kind of training myself to make sure I'm not forgetting my bottle. This is saving me money in the long run and is even making me cut back on my soda drinking habits. My medications make me thirsty so I usually drink a lot at a time, so it's a bit awkward and difficult to carry around a large bottle rather than multiple in a day. Campus also makes it difficult in certain areas to refill bottles, but it's also making me more aware of resources on campus.

semi-related, I'm glad we talked about making drinks today; water can get monotonous and it's nice that kombucha, milkshakes, smoothies, and some juices are all easy enough to make
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I carry things by hand or accept only paper bags. I want to put at least one rolled up tote bag in each of my purses since I don't drive and can't just put one in my trunk.

Since I walk everywhere I find that getting no more than I can hold in a store is helpful, even when I have my own bags. I can then put them in my own bag when I am out of the store, or If I forget a bag I was able to carry the items anyways. I recognize that this is mostly possible because I live alone and without pets tho.

I have actually adopted this theory if I forget my reusable bags- I buy what I can carry. It has saved me lots of money on the days that I do forget them lol.

some cloth bags roll up into balls that easily fit into a purse.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

    Makenzie Brundage's avatar
    Makenzie Brundage 1/16/2025 7:56 PM
I'm not surprised. It feels really obvious that so much money is wasted because when I meal prep it feels like there's so many more options in my fridge and pantry. I feel like I can buy even more food! And get my hair cut!

I'm pretty fortunate to have batch cooking drilled into me from a young age. It can be helpful for a busy life style to cook once or twice a week and have leftovers. This allows a single person to shop at stores that sells ingredients in large quantities at a lower price for families, which often have bulk options as well, possibly creating less waste. I will admit that some people can't take having the same meal 4 nights a week though. Sometimes I can't.
