Caitlin's actions

Nature

Join An Outdoor Project

I will join a local or campus-based outdoor restoration project to help care for natural spaces and get involved in hands-on environmental work.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Take 5-Minute Showers

I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Spend Time Outside

I will replace 20 minutes per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Enjoy the Sunrise or Sunset

I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Brush My Teeth Without Running Water

I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Enjoy a Meatless Meal

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Plan Meals for the Week

I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Go For A Daily Walk in Nature

I will take a 30-minute walk outside each day around my campus, neighborhood, or local green space to connect with nature.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

Rachel Carson's idea that humans need the beauty of the natural world definitely rings true for me. A culture that spends most of the time indoors could not fully appreciate the natural wonder of the world and what would be necessary to protect it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
Do you know where your campus or community gets its water? If not, how could you find out?

    Caitlin Buckley(102) 10/28/2025 10:13 AM
I do know where York gets its water, as the York Water Company is the provider. York Water gets its water from the East and Southern branch of the Codourus watershed. As well as a backup pipeline from the Susquehanna River.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How was your experience intentionally trying to eat less meat?

    Caitlin Buckley(102)'s avatar
    Caitlin Buckley(102) 10/28/2025 10:06 AM
When intentionally trying to eat less meat, I found that planning meals was a tad more difficult since the meat is no longer the main feature of the dish. However, I found it made meals feel lighter, and I paid more attention to what I was eating.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
How well do you know the area you live in? In what ways is a deep knowledge of your surroundings -- known as a 'sense of place' -- important to you?

Being part of the York College STREAM Team has enabled me to become more connected to the natural world around me. We learn about all the species that interact with the Tyler Run Stream and why restoration of the stream and surrounding vegetation is vital for the ecosystem. This is important to me because I believe that in nature, nothing lives alone. That means humans must consider their impact on the environment and work to protect it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What did you notice about your habits or routines when limiting your showers to five minutes? What changes—if any—do you think you’ll continue long-term?

    Caitlin Buckley(102) 10/24/2025 2:28 PM
I noticed that getting ready before class was easier cause I didn't shower for as long so it allowed me to eat breakfast more. I will probably continue taking a quick shower in the morning as it wakes me up and still leaves me with enough time to get ready with time to spare.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where else would you rather invest this money instead of wasting food?

    Caitlin Buckley(102)'s avatar
    Caitlin Buckley(102) 10/23/2025 9:55 AM
Unfortunately, throwing out 240 lbs of food per year does not surprise me, considering how quickly food can spoil if forgotten about. I'd rather invest that money into having fun with my friends than letting it go to waste in the trash.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

    Caitlin Buckley(102)'s avatar
    Caitlin Buckley(102) 10/22/2025 8:42 AM
People should celebrate the Earth more; it is the only known place in the universe that can support life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Caitlin Buckley(102)'s avatar
    Caitlin Buckley(102) 10/22/2025 8:39 AM
When walking around my neighborhood, I notice a lot more than when I am driving. The types of houses, the items people have on their porch, and the types of walkways in different areas.
