Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will mulch the base of trees or plants near my dorm, apartment, or school garden to reduce runoff and help soil retain water.
Energy
Calculate my Digital Carbon Footprint
I will calculate my digital carbon footprint and take steps to reduce my CO2 emissions.
Energy
Switch To Cold Water for Laundry
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags when Shopping
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Community
Watch a Documentary About Racial Injustice
I will watch 1 documentaries about systemic racism to learn more about how it affects us and the planet.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 60 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Water
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 per day.
Waste
Learn About and Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Water
Collect Rain Water for Outdoor Use
I will create a rain garden or bioswale or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.
Energy
Turn Off Lights and Electronics
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to 0.21 lbs (0.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Waste
Visit a Local Recycling Center, Landfill, or Transfer Station
Seeing where waste goes can change how we think about what we throw away. I will visit a local facility to learn more about the waste stream in my community and share what I learn with others and in the feed.
Community
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.
Food
Try a New Way to Prepare Food
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Community
Listen to Equity and Justice Podcasts
I will spend 90 minutes listening to a podcast about equity and justice.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 8 disposable plastic bottles from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 4 plastic straws out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Research Local Waste and Landfill Sites
I will spend 75 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Waste
Carry My Trash for Awareness
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will try to shop at a farmers market or food co-op, if one is accessible, to support local farmers and businesses. By doing so, I may be able to learn more about who produces the food I eat and goods I buy.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
lidia chavez 3/20/2026 5:16 PMBarriers to using reusable bottles can include forgetting to bring one, not always having access to clean refill stations, or preferring the convenience of bottled water. To make it a permanent habit, I could carry a reusable bottle with me daily, keep backups in my car or bag, and make it part of my routine to refill it before leaving home. Over time, this would make using reusable bottles feel normal and more convenient than buying bottled water.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you encourage your classmates or school to promote two-sided printing as the default?
lidia chavez 3/20/2026 5:16 PMI could encourage my classmates and school to promote two-sided printing by raising awareness about how much paper it saves and its environmental benefits. I could suggest making double-sided printing the default in school computer settings, talk to teachers or administration about it, and share reminders or posts to encourage others to use it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
lidia chavez 3/20/2026 5:15 PMIf I already have multiple reusable bags, I can make sure to keep them in places I always go—like my car, backpack, or by the door—so I don’t forget. I could also remind myself before going into a store to grab one, and if I do forget, make it a rule to carry items by hand instead of taking a plastic bag. This helps reinforce the habit over time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat podcast did you choose and what did you learn on the podcast you listened to?
lidia chavez 3/20/2026 5:14 PMI chose a podcast about sustainability and environmental issues, and I learned how everyday choices—like energy use and consumption—can have a big impact on the environment. It also explained how climate change affects communities differently and why it’s important to make more sustainable choices.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityA Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?
lidia chavez 3/20/2026 5:13 PMI can help address systemic racism by supporting minority-owned businesses, advocating for fair policies, and raising awareness about unequal access to opportunities. I can also be intentional about where I spend my money, promote inclusivity, and speak up when I see unfair treatment.
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterDo you know where your campus or community gets its water? If not, how could you find out?
lidia chavez 3/20/2026 5:12 PMI’m not completely sure where my campus or community gets its water, but I could find out by checking my school’s website, contacting local water authorities, or looking at resources from Honolulu Board of Water Supply.
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
lidia chavez 3/20/2026 5:12 PMI could reduce waste by buying only what I need, reuse items like bags and containers, refuse single-use plastics, repair things instead of replacing them, and repurpose items to give them a second life.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
lidia chavez 3/20/2026 5:04 PMWhat inspires me to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues is the future of the next generations and the importance of protecting biodiversity. I want to help ensure that future generations have a healthy environment to live in, with clean air, water, and natural resources. At the same time, preserving biodiversity is important because all living things are connected, and protecting ecosystems helps maintain balance in nature.
