Mary's actions
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 35 minute(s)
Transportation
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 20-minute walk outside each day.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 60 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 15 minute(s) each day.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Mary Cochran 901 4/21/2024 3:51 PMI always, ALWAYS recycle any paper or mail that I have, as I know it not only helps the environment reduce waste, but it also makes new products from material that is still good. I feel really good when I recycle, because I feel as if I am helping the world produce more things that don't have to be from new sources. -
Mary Cochran 901 4/21/2024 3:49 PMAs EcoChallenge is coming to an end, I can't believe the personal impact I have made on a lot of things in my life, including reducing my use of straws, exercising, getting more needed sleep, eating more fruits and vegetables, and saving miles on my car from making multiple trips into one that is convenient. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Mary Cochran 901 4/20/2024 7:37 PMI am always looking into new ways of making my own food, planting my own vegetables and fruit, and preserving things to be eaten later on. I love to make pickles, jams and jellies, and my family personally cans and preserves sauerkraut. -
Mary Cochran 901 4/17/2024 7:00 PMThis program has helped me find the time to incorporate exercise into my daily routine, as I have started participating in yoga and stretching more, two things I have always wanted to do. -
Mary Cochran 901 4/14/2024 6:40 PMAs the weather is starting to get nice and warm out, I have started planting my own garden of vegetables and herbs to be used in my future meals to increase my intake of fruits and vegetables, as well as spend more time outside to enjoy the sun and fresh air.-
genevet guzman 104 4/14/2024 9:57 PMWow, that's so cool! I'd love to do the same someday. There's something truly rewarding about growing your own fresh food. It's inspiring to hear about your garden and the benefits it brings to you.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Drive LessHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Mary Cochran 901 4/12/2024 11:01 AMThere is always a way to get around, whether that is walking, bicycling, or even using public transportation when you don't have a vehicle of your own. Each type of transportation gives a different experience too. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Mary Cochran 901 4/12/2024 11:00 AMI strongly dislike being on social media, as it used to changed my views and thoughts on things and make them more negative. Not being on social media is a relief to me because the friends who truly care about me text me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Mary Cochran 901 4/12/2024 10:59 AMI just recently moved into a new house, so walking around my neighborhood has helped me discover what I live close to, the nature around me, the environment and type of people, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Enjoy the Sunrise/SunsetFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
Mary Cochran 901 4/12/2024 10:58 AMI believe Berry is absolutely correct, as watching the sunrise or sunset is celebration of a day ending a new one beginning, also opening new possibilities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Mary Cochran 901 4/12/2024 10:56 AMI believe that going outside and being "one with nature" has a big influence on the mental and emotional state of one. Going outside to garden, hike, etc. gives one a true sense of peace, openness, and discovering new things in the world we live in. Discovering true beauty.
