Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • The 14 gardens we built today were filled with native perennials and selected as pollinator plants and host plants for local insect species.

  • We built 14 gardens today on an urban street that needed some love. All of the plants were locally sourced and selected as native pollinators and host plants to benefit local pollinators.

  • We held the Pollinator Awareness Faire today which included raffles and a student art sale. The finds raised will go to student artists as well as help the Beekeeping Club with local environmental efforts involving helping pollinators.

  • Had a VERY successful garden dig over the weekend. Volunteered with Fresh Food Farms at an urban garden and helped with weeding as well as splitting plants. The plants removed will be transplanted at another location in town that is desperately in need of some beautification. Filled 80 pots with perennial plants to use at the next garden!

  • This challenge is fun to do two years in a row, I picked different things to work on this year and I'm enjoying the different aspects of all the different challenges.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Fix Leaky Faucets
Fixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?

We are getting excited about rain collection barrels for our chicken coop. We have a neighbor who has one they are not using so we are trying to work out if we can get it secondhand and set it up to water our chickens.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

Creativity is needed because our society isn't really set up to practice simplicity, we're mostly pressured to consume instead. To think differently is to be creative. Coming up with different ways to reuse items before throwing them away, going to thrift stores and seeing treasure where others saw trash, repurposing furniture.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

I cleaned out the chicken coop and put the old bedding into the compost bin to mix in with our food scraps. I don't toss too much food scrap material in the compost bin when I cook because I try to cook them in other ways. So I tend to keep things like onion and garlic skins, carrot peels, mushroom and broccoli stems, etc in the freezer to eventually make into vegetable broth when I have enough. So our compost bin has mostly things like egg shells, banana peels, asparagus stems, potato peels, and leafy greens that have gone slimy or fruit that has gone soft before we could eat them. When our compost is done we will spread it in our perennial garden and to start another pollinator garden.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Track my Purchases
What have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?

I seem to spend money on food and gas for my vehicle more than anything else. I don't really buy a lot of clothes or knick-knacks or anything like that. The money I spend on gas is currently fixed, but I could make shifts in the types of food I purchase and where I purchase it from.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Reduce refined sugar
Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?

No I def did not think that. That said, I've been craving and eating a lot of chocolatey things lately :/
