Upgrade My Windows
I will upgrade the windows or weatherstripping in my home or office to reduce air leaks and save on energy costs.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace, dorm, or elsewhere on campus.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products
I will spend 60 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home or dorm room.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.
Waste

Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community while observing best practices in my region for not spreading COVID-19.
Water
Fix Leaky Faucets
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water a day or 270 (1,020 L) gallons of water a month per faucet.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Advocate for More Food Options
I will advocate for local and/or organic food options at work or on campus.
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
I will raise money to support Ecochallenge.org or another nonprofit.
Community
Host A Watch Party
I will host a watch party to screen a documentary about an issue that matters to me.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Simplicity
Track my Purchases
I will spend 10 minutes each day maintaining a record of all my purchases and learning about my spending habits.
Simplicity
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, neighbors or classmates.
Simplicity
Buy Used Clothes
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the perils of fast fashion and will buy my clothes at second-hand stores when I shop.
Nature
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Nature
Leave No Trace
I will practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Health

Kaitlin Dannenberg (Slaysman Micro) 4/21/2024 5:27 PMThe 14 gardens we built today were filled with native perennials and selected as pollinator plants and host plants for local insect species. -
Kaitlin Dannenberg (Slaysman Micro) 4/21/2024 5:26 PMWe built 14 gardens today on an urban street that needed some love. All of the plants were locally sourced and selected as native pollinators and host plants to benefit local pollinators. -
Kaitlin Dannenberg (Slaysman Micro) 4/20/2024 3:03 PMWe held the Pollinator Awareness Faire today which included raffles and a student art sale. The finds raised will go to student artists as well as help the Beekeeping Club with local environmental efforts involving helping pollinators. -
Kaitlin Dannenberg (Slaysman Micro) 4/17/2024 4:48 PMHad a VERY successful garden dig over the weekend. Volunteered with Fresh Food Farms at an urban garden and helped with weeding as well as splitting plants. The plants removed will be transplanted at another location in town that is desperately in need of some beautification. Filled 80 pots with perennial plants to use at the next garden! -
Kaitlin Dannenberg (Slaysman Micro) 10/17/2023 1:12 PMThis challenge is fun to do two years in a row, I picked different things to work on this year and I'm enjoying the different aspects of all the different challenges. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Fix Leaky FaucetsFixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?
Kaitlin Dannenberg (Slaysman Micro) 10/17/2023 1:11 PMWe are getting excited about rain collection barrels for our chicken coop. We have a neighbor who has one they are not using so we are trying to work out if we can get it secondhand and set it up to water our chickens. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Kaitlin Dannenberg (Slaysman Micro) 10/05/2023 5:50 AMCreativity is needed because our society isn't really set up to practice simplicity, we're mostly pressured to consume instead. To think differently is to be creative. Coming up with different ways to reuse items before throwing them away, going to thrift stores and seeing treasure where others saw trash, repurposing furniture. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Kaitlin Dannenberg (Slaysman Micro) 10/03/2023 7:23 AMI cleaned out the chicken coop and put the old bedding into the compost bin to mix in with our food scraps. I don't toss too much food scrap material in the compost bin when I cook because I try to cook them in other ways. So I tend to keep things like onion and garlic skins, carrot peels, mushroom and broccoli stems, etc in the freezer to eventually make into vegetable broth when I have enough. So our compost bin has mostly things like egg shells, banana peels, asparagus stems, potato peels, and leafy greens that have gone slimy or fruit that has gone soft before we could eat them. When our compost is done we will spread it in our perennial garden and to start another pollinator garden. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Track my PurchasesWhat have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?
Kaitlin Dannenberg (Slaysman Micro) 10/03/2023 7:15 AMI seem to spend money on food and gas for my vehicle more than anything else. I don't really buy a lot of clothes or knick-knacks or anything like that. The money I spend on gas is currently fixed, but I could make shifts in the types of food I purchase and where I purchase it from. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Reduce refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Kaitlin Dannenberg (Slaysman Micro) 10/03/2023 7:13 AMNo I def did not think that. That said, I've been craving and eating a lot of chocolatey things lately :/
