  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Research Restorative Justice
How can Restorative Justice help foster the well-being of both people and planet?

    Maddie Dewees (cho 902)'s avatar
    Maddie Dewees (cho 902) 10/06/2023 9:07 AM
Restorative Justice can help both people and the planet by providing care for those who are committing and causing harmful things to the world. It can help identify what the people did and help them, but also give the people consequences for their actions and make them realize that what they did was not ok and cannot be done again for their own well-being as well as others.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Engage In Active Listening
What was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?

    Maddie Dewees (cho 902)'s avatar
    Maddie Dewees (cho 902) 10/06/2023 8:59 AM
It was different, but it was a good way. Instead of always being mindful of just my opinions, I was open and considerate of others' interests and opinions. I really enjoyed listening to what my friends had to say and what interest them instead of always thinking about what interest just me.

My campus ecochallenge is going really well. I have learned many new things and I am able to think about the everyday things I do in my life from a different perspective.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Maddie Dewees (cho 902)'s avatar
    Maddie Dewees (cho 902) 10/06/2023 8:55 AM
I believe that this is very true for me. When I am inside all the time I feel dull and occasionally sad because there is no light, no sounds, and a lot of dark thoughts. When I venture outside, there are so many things that happen outside that we don't realize a while lot. I notice people walking, people walking their dogs, socializing, and being on with nature.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Maddie Dewees (cho 902)'s avatar
    Maddie Dewees (cho 902) 10/06/2023 8:53 AM
So for my walk, I decided to park farther away from campus than usual, take a walk, and get a breath of fresh air. I noticed how people act when walking, how they socialize, and the things in nature that happen when I'm walking instead of driving.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

    Maddie Dewees (cho 902)'s avatar
    Maddie Dewees (cho 902) 10/04/2023 3:15 PM
In Pennsylvania, we use around 10,402 kWh per year, and in Virginia, we use around 1,117 kWh/month. After looking at this, PA uses so much more electricity than other states. Ways for me to prevent this usage from increasing by not using much electricity being mindful of when my lights are on and using natural light.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Maddie Dewees (cho 902)'s avatar
    Maddie Dewees (cho 902) 10/04/2023 3:10 PM
According to statistia.com, electricity is generated in York, PA by fossil fuels. This impacts our environment, animals, and humans because it affects how we live, and survive function. If we didn't have electricity, then there wouldn't be any way of using gas stoves, providing heat in our homes, etc,.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Heat and Cool Naturally
What are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?

    Maddie Dewees (cho 902) 10/04/2023 3:07 PM
Instead of having lights on, turn them off as well as possibly opening up windows and letting natural light inside your home or dorm.
