Water
Learn About Water Justice
Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 60 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.
Community
Listen to Equity and Justice Podcasts
I will spend 120 minutes listening to a podcast about equity and justice.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to 0.21 lbs (0.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Food
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day.
Transportation
Use Public Transit Instead of Driving
I will use public transit 2 miles each day and avoid sending CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Energy
Switch To Cold Water for Laundry
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.

Cian Dimmick 5/31/2026 3:43 PMToday I spent an hour researching about mason bees and how to care for them. They're insanely cool! I learned that, unlike honeybees, mason bees are solitary, so each female mason bee builds her own nest without a colony or queen. They are super efficient pollinators for early spring flowers and they're also known for their docile nature. They also have a pollination rate of 95% compared to honey bees with just 5%. Keeping them involves providing a nesting structure with these removable tubes or trays to help with annual cleaning, a nearby source of mud for nest construction, and early-blooming flowers nearby. I am definitely considering installing some small mason bee houses all around the yard, and I'm super excited to see how it turns out. I think it could be a great addition alongside the pollinator lawn I just set up.-

Cian Dimmick 5/24/2026 3:17 PMThis week for the ecochallenge about consumption, I watched a documentary called "You Need This' (2026). The central argument of the documentary was that in consumer capitalism, enough is never enough. It argues that this modern economic system based on perpetual growth and material accumulation has evolved into a kind of "insidious belief structure" which is breaking down human connection and creating a destructive loop of work and consumption. One of the most striking pieces of the documentary was a section about targeted dream incubation. It described how corporations are already investing in technology to place advertisements directly into our subconscious while we are sleeping. It's pretty terrifying.-
Amy Minato 5/25/2026 1:45 PMso true! we are encouraged to believe that we need more stuff to be happy. scary about ads in our subconscious!

Cian Dimmick 5/17/2026 12:53 PMI'm very committed to public transportation because I live downtown and I don't have a car. I use the streetcar and the bus all the time. Its a rewarding feeling to get around without being personally responsible for any extra emissions and it is almost always a positive experience. I really wish the streetcar system had even more routes around the city, because it is truly fantastic. I will always prioritize public transportation!-

Lauren Neville 5/17/2026 1:49 PMI love that Cian. I also wish there were more streetcars because I like them better. The ride is smoother, and there's more space, which makes it easier to take a bike on and off of it. Im still afraid to hook my bike up to the front of a bus!

Cian Dimmick 5/10/2026 6:29 PMToday I listened to a podcast episode from one of my favorite podcasts called Rev Left Radio. It was an episode surrounding the Palestinian resistance and an interview with Mohanad Alsayed, who grew up under the occupation.-

Cian Dimmick 5/03/2026 3:35 PMToday I spent about an hour watching a PBS documentary called Upstream, Downriver: Uniting for Water Justice (2025) . I would recommend it! I think it gives a really good overview of the state of water justice in the country right now. It talks about the issues at hand, and it also talks about policy interventions, public action, and technological innovations surrounding water quality.-

Cian Dimmick 4/24/2026 3:24 PMI really want to push myself to be more vegetarian. I don't know if I could eventually give up meat completely, but I have already stopped eating beef, and at this point the only meat that I eat somewhat regularly is chicken. I'm going to push myself to make more meals without any meat though, and find ways to replace the protein like with beans and chickpea/lentil pasta. I also want to try cooking with tofu more. I need to get better at it!-

I strongly recommend this soup with a few alterations: Less chili flake, and it does not need to be salt and peppered four separate times -_-* It can be made vegetarian with a vegetable broth or a mock chicken broth (which is what I use.) -
Colin Russell 4/25/2026 11:55 AMGood challenge. Even if you're still eating meat sometimes, you're still reducing the amount you eat, and that is going to create a significant impact, regardless. Just by the fact that you are not eating it as frequently. Btw Quinoa is amazing too and also versatile!

Cian Dimmick 4/19/2026 3:20 PMHonestly I hadn't thought about how much more energy it takes to wash your clothes with warm water instead of just cold water. It makes no difference to me so I'm happy that I can go forward washing with cold water now!-

Cian Dimmick 4/10/2026 2:08 PMI chose to commit to only printing double sided from now on. As a student, I have to print a lot of papers and projects, so acknowledging this commitment feels good, no matter how small the impact may be!-
Amy Minato 4/13/2026 3:17 PM -
Sam Dare 4/12/2026 10:40 PMNice one! I can relate. Being a student has demanded quite a share of printed papers. I love the double sided printing commitment. The little things add up! -
Colin Russell 4/11/2026 11:46 PMI like this commitment. I wish I could use this for printing colored images for architecture school, I use so much paper for that major.
