It was not hard to choose other activities over screen time. I decided to spend that time by either going to the gym, studying for classes, or playing basketball.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If you live on campus or in shared housing, you may not receive a utility bill—so what are some other ways you can reduce energy use in your living space?

Other steps that I can take to reduce my energy usage is turning lights off, or turning off any electronics that are not in use. Another thing I can do is switching to LED light bulbs.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where else would you rather invest this money instead of wasting food?

I would rather invest this money in savings or a vacation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

A system that I can put in place is to just use the cart or if there is not that many items to just carry them out by hand.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    Blake Downs 102 10/28/2025 3:51 PM
A barrier to me is if I am in a rush it is quick and easy to just grab a plastic bottle of water vs finding a reusable one and then having to take the time to fill it up. To make this a permanent habit I will fill a reusable one up ahead of time so I won't be in a rush.
