What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

I really enjoyed my time without any devices. I went for a hike and enjoyed the nice cool day and admired nature. No, it was not hard to do this, I like getting off of devices and clearing my mind. I hiked over at Mulberry Overlook, a little muddy but definitely worth it, and I had a nice time.

How do you practice self care?

    Arianna Enriquez 11/13/2024 9:30 PM
I workout, I enjoy nature and allow my brain to take a break, I do facemasks and fun things to relax, listen to music that makes me happy, enjoy my favorite foods, hang out with friends that are positiv and recharge my battery, I try to love myself even on days when I am feeling low, I try to do a lot of self care, those are just a few of the examples I can think of right now.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

    Arianna Enriquez's avatar
    Arianna Enriquez 11/12/2024 10:36 AM
Not only changing the thermostat helps conserve electricity usage, but also unplugging appliances, turning off lights, shorter showers, opening windows for light, etc. All of those things can be very helpful.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Arianna Enriquez's avatar
    Arianna Enriquez 11/10/2024 8:02 PM
I already reduce plastic waste by using a reusable water bottle. I reuse by buying second-hand clothes and thrifting instead of always buying new things. I recycle recyclable items in my household and separate them from the trash. I repair by sewing my clothes when they get a snag or tear. I repurpose items when I know they will come in handy for something else, but I don't do this as much. I already incorporate these things in my life, but I could definitely do it more often than I already do.

How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

It's easy to get caught up by all the negative things going on in the world, so it's important to take time out of our day to recognize positive things and count our blessings. Especially durng election week, it's been stressful and there has been so much hate all over social media. It's sad to see how politics can so easily tear people apart and have such an impact on peoples views of others. During this week I have been trying to find the positives and ignore social media as much as possible. This action was perfect for just that.

    Community SIGN UP TO VOTE
Why is voting important to creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world? In what other ways can you actively participate in important decision-making?

    Arianna Enriquez 11/07/2024 8:01 AM
It's important to vote on important matters and to let our voices be heard. We all have the ability to make a large decision as a community, so it's important we all use our privilege of voting. Our votes can have a huge impact on so many areas of our environment, economy, and society. Ways to actively participate are by voting, participating in peaceful protest, or doing clubs and fundraising, which can bring awareness to causes you care about. It can make an impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    Arianna Enriquez's avatar
    Arianna Enriquez 11/07/2024 7:45 AM
We need to educate about and supply water filtration systems. Filtering water reduces plastic waste from bottles and allows people to reuse jugs, reusable bottles, glass containers, etc. Maybe instead of supplying large quantities of water bottles, we can provide those big five-gallon water jugs to people's homes. Then, when they need water, they can fill up reusable water bottles. And then, when they run out of water, we refill the five-gallon water jugs. It would prevent a lot of plastic waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Arianna Enriquez's avatar
    Arianna Enriquez 11/07/2024 7:40 AM
Microplastics from the production of plastics get into our water and food and eventually get into our bodies, which is extremely harmful. It also pollutes the ocean and harms marine life. This is on a global scale. To prevent this, it's important to use reusable products instead of single-use.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Simplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future?

    Arianna Enriquez's avatar
    Arianna Enriquez 11/06/2024 4:24 PM
Before going to the grocery store/general store, I should make a note of what I already have and make a list before leaving. It's easy to forget what we already have at home; this will prevent me from buying more than what I need. Also, setting a budget can be helpful, it prevents me from overspending and buying unnecessary things I may not necessarily need. Donating clothes/items before buying new stuff also also a way of avoiding extra clutter.

    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Arianna Enriquez 11/06/2024 8:04 AM
I like to go on jogs in the morning a few times a week If I am having a stressful week or it's an exam week. One way I can incorporate personal values is by having quality time with friends while jogging. I can do this by inviting them to jog with me or go for a walk. My roommate will sometimes come with me, which is really nice and is usually a motivation for me as well.
