Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Susan Gibbs 11/09/2023 9:49 PMI'm about a 5-10 minute drive from places that recycle flexible plastics, glass, metals, styrofoam, bottles, appliances (small & large), paint, electronics and more. We accumulate our recyclables to minimize the amounts of trips made. This close proximity certainly makes it easier to recycle as much as we can without having to go a great distance, very little ever gets put in the garbage bin that my city collects! -
Susan Gibbs 11/07/2023 1:14 PMWow, hard to believe we are in the last days of this challenge! I’ve enjoyed and appreciated everyone’s comments in the feed, and am happy to see the way this challenge has inspired so many of us to acquire more sustainable habits. The next challenge will be for us to do our best to maintain these great new habits! 😀

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Tour A Waste Management FacilityField trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you tour? What did you learn?
Susan Gibbs 11/05/2023 10:04 PMI wanted to see where all of my waste was going so I did virtual tours of a composting facility, a recycling depot, a landfill site and a transfer station. It's not surprising to learn how much contamination there is with the recycling, particularly the plastics. My city has a 14% contamination rate with the recycling which is deemed unacceptable by Recycle BC. They are taking steps to remediate this by auditing recycling carts on collection days and notifying residents. I've also noticed they are providing more resources like the "waste wizard" that help people with sorting their waste. However its only helpful if people take the time to use it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Susan Gibbs 10/24/2023 9:08 PMFor me, this statement is reversed, I find simplicity is a necessary ingredient for creativity. Simplifying my surroundings frees my mind from clutter and allows me to focus more on what I’m doing and come up with more creative ideas.

Janelle Sztuhar 10/31/2023 11:22 AMAgreed Susan! I find when I tidy my home - I have a sense of calm again :D As it usually gets a bit messy with the busy week. It is definitely a cycle at my house. But I think I will try to be creative with my holiday wrapping this year - saving Amazon/shoe boxes instead of buying new boxes. I do keep packaging from past years - but I am going to try not to buy new wrapping this year and I am need to get creative!

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Susan Gibbs 10/20/2023 9:15 PMMy husband was invited to teach a 2 day workshop out of province. Instead he convinced them to move it to a zoom meeting to avoid 1600 km in air travel. There are more options now with virtual formats for meetings and conferences which is good for reducing air and ground travel. However it's not as easy when visiting family that may live across the country and you have limited vacation time, for that flying might be the only option.-
Janelle Sztuhar 10/31/2023 11:26 AMThat is so cool! Good for him! Something to keep in mind when we can. I agree - when visiting loved ones air travel is sometimes the easiest option. I have noticed some airlines now include information on carbon emissions or you can pay an extra fee to offset your emissions.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Susan Gibbs 10/19/2023 9:56 PMEating more fruits and vegetables keeps me healthier, especially when I want to snack on something! When the fruits and veggies are locally produced, I help support the local farmers. The production of meat not only produces greenhouse gases and consumes alot of water, but also contributes to deforestation. I recently read an article saying that meat production in Brazil was a significant contributor to deforestation of the rainforests as more forests were being cleared to accommodate grazing cattle.-
Janelle Sztuhar 11/01/2023 10:28 AMHi Susan - all great points! I am looking for sneaky ways to include more veggies into my diet via salads, sauces, muffins, and egg dishes. Trying to get more nutrients into my family's diet to keep us all healthy.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Susan Gibbs 10/18/2023 9:28 PMVisible mending can creatively extend and add new life to clothing that is worn, holey, frayed, stained or torn. You can darn your favourite socks or sweaters, patch jeans, embroider over stains, and repurpose old styles to give a one-of-a-kind look. I’m constantly darning socks and recently turned a torn pillowcase into a fancy cushion cover! There are plenty of books and websites with ideas and tutorials, here’s great one to start with: https://visiblemending.com/collections/mends -
Susan Gibbs 10/17/2023 10:20 PMWhile reading about toxic ingredients found in cleaning products and personal care products, I came across talc as being one of the ingredients to avoid in underarm deodorant. It was interesting to note that the harmful effects coming from the talc was to the people who work in the talc mines, their communities and their ecosystems, not the person who uses the deodorant. Something that many of us don't think about. Glad I made the switch to a natural deodorant 3 years ago, produced in BC without harmful ingredients!-
Susan Gibbs 10/18/2023 3:29 PMI use Cascadia Skincare's Natural Deodorant: https://cascadiaskincare.com/products/natural-deodorant
I use the lavender lemon scent and have used the unscented too, both work very well 😀 and the glass jar it comes in is reusable or recyclable. I use quite a few of their products including the shampoo bar. -
Jennifer Martel 10/18/2023 3:19 PMWhat's your favourite natural deodorant brand? I'm trying Routine right now and like it so far :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Susan Gibbs 10/17/2023 9:57 PMFor the most part what I reflect on depends on what is happening in my life at the moment. I should spend more time reflecting on how I can simplify my life and my surroundings and achieve more balance.-
Daniel Cresswell 10/18/2023 11:59 AMI would like to invest more time in socializing with new people and how I interact with others

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Use Reusable BottlesWhat are some of the needs that water meets or benefits that water provides for you?
Susan Gibbs 10/16/2023 8:27 PMDrinking water keeps me hydrated when exercising, helps keep my skin healthy, flushes toxins out of my system and sometimes fills the gap if I'm hungry. I wash with it, cook with it, clean with it, water plants with it and more. A couple months ago our water was shut off for several hours due to a water main repair. Being without any water for those hours reminded me of how important this precious resource is for daily use and how often access to it is taken for granted.
