Food
Plan Meals for the Week
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Make Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Simplicity
Disconnect from Email
I will only check my email during school or study hours, using my personal time for activities that support my well-being and align with my values.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate. I will keep 2 containers out of the landfill each day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottles from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk each day to clear my mind, get some fresh air, and support my physical and mental health as a student.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cups to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Community
Research Restorative Justice
I will spend 30 minutes learning about restorative justice and conflict resolution opportunities in my own community or state.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 per day.
Simplicity
Reflect on My Needs Versus Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.

Korina Gratton 10/10/2025 4:26 PMThere's a chill in the air today! It's tempting to want to turn the heat on, even though we know it will warm up next week and it's not good for the environment. I'm reminding myself that during my childhood, I wasn't allowed to turn the heat on it was past Nov 1st, and only for bedtime (I lived in the mountains and my room was in the basement) - the rest of the time it was layer the sweaters on or use the wood fireplace.-
Samantha G 10/11/2025 4:45 PMSounds like we grew up in the same house, haha! The temps in my house growing up never went higher than 18 C in the winter - so it was "put on a sweater if you're cold." It's funny, I still put a sweater on first instead of turning up the heat!

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityNotice how much time you were spending checking email outside of class or study time. What changed for you when you created space away from your inbox?
Korina Gratton 10/10/2025 4:10 PMWhen I started setting specific times for checking email, I learned how often I check it! It was surprising how often I click on that button and I don't expect much email. Scheduling my email time is also allowing me to be more thoughtful in my responses. -
Korina Gratton 10/07/2025 2:23 PMHow are others balancing sustainable actions with others in your family/household who may not be as committed? -
Korina Gratton 10/06/2025 11:37 AMWent to Boundary Bay today and went for a walk on the beach. My mom reminisced on how different the beach and area looked from her childhood. Lots more buildings built and the water looked pretty scuzzy. We talked about how they used to walk out to the US border (big marker in the middle of the water) and even down to Point Roberts.-
Samantha G 10/07/2025 9:18 AMIt's really interesting how time and human beings change things (in both good and not-so-good ways). I wonder too if time also warps our memories a little, and we remember certain parts of things, or how it felt to do something.

Korina Gratton 10/03/2025 9:08 AMAlmost forgot to check in, so need to build that into my daily schedule. Luckily the actions I chose are things I am trying to do anyways so that isn't more to remember. I just need to be more conscious of my actions and spend more time on the daily actions.-
Samantha G 10/04/2025 10:27 AMThat's a good way to remind you of the habits you are already doing! Sustainability is also about doing what's manageable :)
