When walking from class to class I see so many people using skateboards and bikes to get from place to place. When folks are doing this it helps the environment but it also helps the person at the same time. The individuals are saving money and getting exercise at the same time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

I feel that in the world today most people get online subscriptions. This is a good thing because going online will not result in any hard copies. On the other hand some folks still like the old fashion hard copies. As I do not think we can go fully online we can still help reduce the hard copies by slowly transitioning to online subscriptions.

As I was in the dining hall this morning, I saw an ad about a metal straw. When I saw this I thought about this Eco Challenge. As I skip the plastic straws, getting a metal straw could be an investment I make. For me, I would not purchase this item but it is something one could consider so there is no plastic waste.

It has been going very well, I like to check in and see my progress every day. When I am at the dining hall I can always save plastic straws and just drink out of the cup by the rim. Many times we are offered plastic bags if we want to take our food to go. Now that I am in this challenge I always say, no thank you, to the bags.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

I always try to reduce the time I am driving my car because it could lead to bad things for the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

If you are at the grocery store instead of using bags you could keep all your items in your cart and push it to your car.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Use Public Transit
The US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and just 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not? How would you adjust them if you could?

I am surprised that the transportation percentage is so low. I feel it should not be because more transportation could result in better opportunities.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

I am thankful that I have the opportunity to get a college experience with great professors!
