Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 20 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Nature
Keep a Nature Journal
I will journal each day about my experiences in nature.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 20 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 5 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
genevet guzman 104 4/14/2024 9:46 PMI like to preserve a variety of foods to enjoy later in the year. Some of my favorites include homemade salsa and cooking sauces. I already buy some fruits, clean and cut them, then freeze them for later use in smoothies. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsMany people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?
genevet guzman 104 4/14/2024 12:58 PMYes, we can't feed the whole world with organic food, but we also can't ignore the potential benefits that come from sustainable practices and transitioning to organic farming. While it may not be the sole solution, prioritizing and promoting organic methods can contribute to healthier food systems and a more sustainable future for generations. One must look at the bigger picture, instead of focusing on short-term solutions and gains. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
genevet guzman 104 4/14/2024 1:39 AMUsing reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water offers safety and convenience, but there is a high potential for food to contain toxins from plastic, "People who eat seafood ingest up to 11,000 tiny pieces of plastic every year." This microplastic pollution and toxins pose significant concerns for both human health and the ocean's ecosystem. Instead of merely spreading awareness, providing incentives for governments and organizations like Coca-Cola, which "produces more than 100bn throwaway plastic bottles every year," publicly disclosing and implementing the use of RPet in plastic bottle production could lead to greater transparency, improvements, and increased use of recycled materials. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITESIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
genevet guzman 104 4/14/2024 1:04 AMIn Pennsylvania, landfill sites can be found in locations such as the Old City of York Landfill in Seven Valleys and the region of York, PA, where Modern Landfill & Recycling is located. Neighbors living near landfills can be affected the most due to factors such as bad smells, noise, health risks from groundwater contamination, and impacts on the ecosystem, specifically soil quality and wildlife.
