Halle 's actions
Simplicity
Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 5-minute walk outside each day.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or organize car sharing with my neighbors or classmates to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 15 minute(s)
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Halle Eaton (101) 4/08/2024 9:41 AMI plan on either saving it, or putting it towards my monthly car bills -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Core ValuesWhat are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?
Halle Eaton (101) 4/03/2024 10:06 AM1.) Be kind
2.) Be creative
3.) Be honest
I narrowed it down to my top three based off of how I interact with people on a day to day basis, as well as how I focus on myself. These three values have always been heavily important to me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Halle Eaton (101) 4/03/2024 10:01 AMThe first that comes to mind is the pollution of our water systems. An every present issue with our ocean, is the act of people dumping trash and waste into the oceans. I think we need to prevent that from continuing to happening by being mindful of the trashes impact on the ocean and the sea creatures who live in the ocean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Halle Eaton (101) 4/02/2024 8:59 AMI walk on my way to classes from the student parking lot, and I opted to park further away from the front of the parking lot, so I could walk longer to class today. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Halle Eaton (101) 4/02/2024 8:54 AMFor example, when I hang out with friends I usually go shopping with them. Since I am in a position where I need to save money for future endeavors, I've adapted to not shopping with friends, and instead we try to find creative and entertaining things we can do that is free (I.e. playing video games I already own, watching movies from home, etc;) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Car ShareTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (school, work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Halle Eaton (101) 4/02/2024 8:51 AMI choose to just go to the grocery store when my household does their weekly food restock. If I run out of a snack or something that I need I am usually able to wait until I can carpool with my family to go food shopping -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Halle Eaton (101) 4/02/2024 6:43 AMIt makes me happy, which in turn allows me to work harder on things I am passionate about, as well as helping other achieve the same -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Halle Eaton (101) 4/02/2024 6:42 AMI can reduce the use of water I use when showering, I can refuse plastic bags and useless waste products, and I can re-purpose things instead of throwing them away. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Halle Eaton (101) 4/02/2024 6:41 AMI use plastic bags when I go shopping, but I can substitute that out for a tote bag -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Halle Eaton (101) 4/02/2024 6:40 AMThe barrier of carrying a reusable bottle is that you cannot recycle it when you finish your water, and have to carry it around all day. Overall, I prefer it compared to a bottle of water because its much more convenient and cost efficient. I currently use a cirkul water bottle in order to drink more water. Having my water have a fruit taste causes me to use my reusable bottle more, as well as drinking more water per day.
