  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Conserve Toilet Water
What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

    Emily Horak's avatar

I think that a lot of people in the region where I live are unaware of how valuable water is, and how privileged we are to always have access to it. It is easily something we can take for granted. When you compare water usage in the western world vs. other countries it is absurd the amount of water we use.

You're right! I think a lot of people also don't understand how water systems work. For instance, I had a colleague remark the other day about why we were still in a drought, even with all the rain. Just because it rains once, doesn't mean we're out of the woods, it takes time to replenish water!

The other day in my bio class we talked about people’s overconsumption of water and this ecochallenge has been really helpful for me to recognize where I can cut back and save water.

    Emily Horak's avatar
    Emily Horak 10/14/2023 9:53 PM
Over the past few years I have been switching to more sustainable and conscious buying practices. Only buying things I need, and if possible buying stuff from thrift stores or supporting small local businesses.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Less Screen Time
What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

    Emily Horak's avatar
    Emily Horak 10/14/2023 9:50 PM
I find that when I'm bored I easily turn to my phone, but this challenge has encouraged me to return to some of my old hobbies like painting, drawing and reading. Which are so m much more rewarding than scrolling through social media.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

    Emily Horak's avatar
    Emily Horak 10/14/2023 6:33 PM
I recently spent the afternoon with my aunt and learned how to make pickles! We ended up making like 50 jars that both our families will be able to enjoy throughout the year.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

    Emily Horak's avatar
    Emily Horak 10/13/2023 5:40 PM
I work at a coffee shop and I always make myself a drink when I'm at work in one of our single-use cups. However, the past couple of weeks I have been trying to remember to bring my reusable cup so I'm not creating so much waste.
