Marshall Israll-Burnett's actions
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop in My Community
I will help improve a bus or shuttle stop on or near my campus by sharing the schedule, picking up litter, adding art, picking up litter, or making other small improvements.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will try to shop at a farmers market or food co-op, if one is accessible, to support local farmers and businesses. By doing so, I may be able to learn more about who produces the food I eat and goods I buy.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for the Earth
I will spend 60 minutes per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Waste
Check Recycling Near Me
Recycling rules vary by location. I’ll spend 10 minutes learning which plastics my local or campus recycling program accepts. This helps me avoid “wishcycling” — tossing items in the bin and hoping they’ll be recycled, even if they aren’t.
Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join a local or campus-based outdoor restoration project to help care for natural spaces and get involved in hands-on environmental work.
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk each day to clear my mind, get some fresh air, and support my physical and mental health as a student.
Nature
Explore a New Trail or Nature Walk
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Transportation
Use Public Transit Instead of Driving
I will use public transit 25 miles each day and avoid sending CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Feedback Survey
Take the Campus Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
Tell us what you thought! Take a short survey about your experience to help us improve future events. It only takes a few minutes — and when you complete the survey, you'll earn points!
Energy
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Energy
Turn Off Lights and Electronics
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 20 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Health
Express Gratitude and Random Acts of Kindness
Small acts of kindness and gratitude can brighten someone's day and create a positive ripple effect. I will express gratitude to people or perform random acts of kindness to spread joy and connection.
Health
Practice Loving-Kindness Meditation
I will spend 15 minutes practicing Loving-Kindness Meditation to nurture love and compassion for myself and others.
Water
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Transportation
Commute By Bike
I will commute by bike 3 miles each day and avoid sending CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Energy
Calculate my Digital Carbon Footprint
I will calculate my digital carbon footprint and take steps to reduce my CO2 emissions.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise or Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Community
Explore the Community Feed and Connect with Others
I will spend 15 minutes reading the Ecochallenge feed each day and giving high fives or commenting on posts by people who I don't know, but whose content inspires or interests me.

Marshall Israll-Burnett (climactica 🎶) 5/21/2026 7:15 AMToday, I am flying to Seattle. As much as I am flying standby and with limited airline options, I told myself I must cut down the CO² emitted by the flights I would take. As such, I chose to fly through Toronto with Alaskan Airlines, opting for Porter out of Montreal to cut down on CO² levels. The Porter flight, as per Google Flights, emits 30% less CO² than the average flight. The Hawaiian flight from YYZ to SEA emits 27% less than normal. Cost wise, it came out to the same on standby whether I were to do that or fly elsewhere. The difference? The pollution level! Very chilly this morning compared to Tuesday......Tuesday highs in Montreal were 35° celsius with the humidex compared to today's high of only 14° celsius. Haven't been posting much, but I will continue to motivate myself because it is important to help others gain confidence and motivation for doing good things in life.

Marshall Israll-Burnett (climactica 🎶) 5/12/2026 11:52 AMToday, I worked more on my upcoming releases, especially since I have lots of free time now since my exams are all over! I read through a composition narrative, kept up with my book "Against the machine" by Paul Kingsnorth. It is a very interesting one!

Marshall Israll-Burnett (climactica 🎶) 5/08/2026 4:42 PMToday, I completed my English exam, and final marketing project. My final marketing project came out a mess, but hopefully my English final I did well on. Sunrise and sunset weren't present today for some reason, but I did get a good sun tan (haha) if only the weather wasn't 6°C! But otherwise had an amazing last Friday of the semester, I taught my last Portuguese conversation group 😢 but everyone came today, making us 5 people total! I celebrated the final day by bringing in natas, a staple of Portuguese culture!

Marshall Israll-Burnett (climactica 🎶) 5/07/2026 8:36 AMToday, I decided to take time for myself. I worked on schoolwork, started memorizing my marketing plan for my presentation tomorrow. I also reviewed for my English exam I have tomorrow. I admit I haven't been completing my actions as often as I should be since our ecochallenge has ended but I am still making an effort to include certain actions in my daily life.

Marshall Israll-Burnett (climactica 🎶) 5/04/2026 3:22 PMI wonder what this Aerogarden is for 👀👀👀👀! Amazing job to everyone not only at John Abbott College but in any other ecological group or team that participated in an ecochallenge this term!! This aerogarden will provide the right amount of spices to add to my recipes 🙃 and if course as the package states "from fresh to plate!" No sunrise today, and no sunset even though the sun popped out midday.

Marshall Israll-Burnett (climactica 🎶) 4/30/2026 7:56 AMToday is unfortunately the last day of ecochallenge. But instead of closing on a negative note, I think it is good to close on a positive note. As such, instead of looking back and saying "Oh I wish I had done more during the ecochallenge", I am sharing my own mentality that the ecochallenge is just the start of a new chapter for many of us. It will improve our future, and has already shaped our past! As Seneca states: "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end". So instead of reflecting on every action this ecochallenge has helped me accomplish, I would prefer to ask myself and the feed this question: which of these daily actions can become lifelong journeys? Whether just turning off the lights when we don't need them or using less water, every small action increases awareness. Awareness is the start of your journey, and it's how we got here. And it's also how we will depart here. Knowing that our awareness helped reshape the community. Knowing that one day, maybe our children will say "hey remember that ecochallenge you did? Can we try one?" And maybe, just maybe our world could actually improve. One small step at a time.

Today, I went for a walk during my 3 hour break. I set up my hammock under some trees. After all, the temperature was very nice! I finished up some work, and then later I also did a tarot reading and cleansed my inner self. You don't have to believe in it for it to be true. But one thing that IS true is this sunset I caught on my way home ☺️

Marshall Israll-Burnett (climactica 🎶) 4/26/2026 8:47 AMCurrently attending the Intercollegiate Eco-Expo, hosted at Dawson College! Many different guest speakers and booths from Cégeps and Universities all across Québec and Montréal have booths here. It reminds me that every sign of awareness makes the best medicine for our planet Earth.
Also met an old friend here that had distanced herself from me, it was very fun!
