Marshall's actions
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop in My Community
I will help improve a bus or shuttle stop on or near my campus by sharing the schedule, picking up litter, adding art, picking up litter, or making other small improvements.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will try to shop at a farmers market or food co-op, if one is accessible, to support local farmers and businesses. By doing so, I may be able to learn more about who produces the food I eat and goods I buy.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for the Earth
I will spend 60 minutes per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Waste
Check Recycling Near Me
Recycling rules vary by location. I’ll spend 10 minutes learning which plastics my local or campus recycling program accepts. This helps me avoid “wishcycling” — tossing items in the bin and hoping they’ll be recycled, even if they aren’t.
Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join a local or campus-based outdoor restoration project to help care for natural spaces and get involved in hands-on environmental work.
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk each day to clear my mind, get some fresh air, and support my physical and mental health as a student.
Nature
Explore a New Trail or Nature Walk
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Transportation
Use Public Transit Instead of Driving
I will use public transit 25 miles each day and avoid sending CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Feedback Survey
Take the Campus Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
Tell us what you thought! Take a short survey about your experience to help us improve future events. It only takes a few minutes — and when you complete the survey, you'll earn points!
Energy
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Energy
Turn Off Lights and Electronics
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 20 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Health
Express Gratitude and Random Acts of Kindness
Small acts of kindness and gratitude can brighten someone's day and create a positive ripple effect. I will express gratitude to people or perform random acts of kindness to spread joy and connection.
Health
Practice Loving-Kindness Meditation
I will spend 15 minutes practicing Loving-Kindness Meditation to nurture love and compassion for myself and others.
Water
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Transportation
Commute By Bike
I will commute by bike 3 miles each day and avoid sending CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Energy
Calculate my Digital Carbon Footprint
I will calculate my digital carbon footprint and take steps to reduce my CO2 emissions.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise or Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Community
Explore the Community Feed and Connect with Others
I will spend 15 minutes reading the Ecochallenge feed each day and giving high fives or commenting on posts by people who I don't know, but whose content inspires or interests me.

Marshall Israll-Burnett 4/12/2026 1:35 PMToday, I had an orienteering activity scheduled at the Arboretum. I kept a good pace whilst running, managing to get 8:22 min/km average. Unfortunately someone sprained her ankle during the course, but luckily she is doing better. I feel very connected to nature today, ignoring the course part of orienteering and really immersing myself in my surroundings. I took 5 minutes to meditate before starting, which helped me connect to my nature side!

Marshall Israll-Burnett 4/11/2026 9:06 PMToday, I was very weak on my goals. But I did get to catch a wonderful sunset!
📍 Montréal, QC
P.S. also shopped local today through a school field trip to Drawn and Quarterly, a local Mile End bookstore. (book was received for free but I still supported and made a note to come back!)-

Marshall Israll-Burnett 4/10/2026 3:50 AMThis morning, instead of the forecasted rain, we instead got this beauty of a sunrise!

Marshall Israll-Burnett 4/10/2026 3:44 AMDuring the splendid improv circus show at the TOHU, where I received free tickets, I decided to purchase 6 red noses, with the funds I spent going towards giving access to acrobatics in less fortunate places. I also purchased local craft gin, therefore supporting small businesses!

This morning sunrise is brought with a motivational quote, because life isn't always about living and sometimes it takes a little motivation to get where you'd like to be. And of course, have a wonderful day today ☺️

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Marshall Israll-Burnett 4/07/2026 5:10 AMI love to make shepherds pie from scratch. Typically, I buy all of my produce from the farmers market or from a local source. My potatoes are also typically from a farm or a local source, but my meat is not unfortunately. Modifying the recipe to include less meat in it may help reduce the harm caused by animal slaughtering. I could also switch up the type of meat I use to ensure that it emits the least amount of GHGs during production. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Marshall Israll-Burnett 4/06/2026 5:02 PMKnowing that hydro electricity is the most common generator of Canadian electricity gives me a sense of power. Hydroelectric energy is what keeps our province and others with the lowest electricity bills. However, Canada has a rate of 80% of its energy sources coming from non-GHG emitting sources, which is still not the 100% it could be at. The 20% comes from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick coal plants, typically in areas where hydroelectricity and other renewable sources aren't feasible. I can take action and make suggestions to further decrease this number by speaking to community leaders.
