Summer's actions
Waste
Complete a Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will share a photo and reflection of this action on the feed.
Food
Make Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Health
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 20 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Simplicity
Think About My Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Transportation
Share Rides with Others
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or coordinate ride shares with roommates, classmates, or campus peers to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
Simplicity
Buy Used Clothes Instead of New
I will spend 20 minutes learning about the perils of fast fashion and will choose thrift stores, clothing swaps, or second-hand options when I shop for clothes.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 per day.
Nature
Learn How to Save the Pollinators
I will spend 20 minutes learning which plants support local native pollinators and grow some in containers, a campus garden, or at home if space allows.

Summer Jin 2/15/2026 10:32 AMSince the temperature has finally gone up this weekend, my friends and I went to practice golf at a range yesterday. It feels really nice, both mentally and physically, to be out on the field again and be able to do an outside sport without worrying about freezing -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityDo people with economic privilege have a responsibility to consume and own less? How can the concept of “reduce” be presented to those who may be struggling to have enough food, clothes, shelter?
Summer Jin 2/12/2026 5:02 PMIn my opinion, I don't think people with economic privilege should all have a responsibility to consume and own less. However, I do think no one should overconsume, as this is definitely not sustainable. For those that have economic privilege have the right to buy more clothes as long as they can make sure all clothes will be used properly and not go to waste. I think the concept of "reduce" for those who may be struggling shouldn't necessarily be to reduce in daily basis. It could be seen that whenever they have the chance to gain a lot of food and clothes all at once, they should also make sure not to overconsume and make sure nothing goes to waste. -
Summer Jin 2/09/2026 9:13 PMI thought about some of my core values that represent who I am, and there are 7 that stood out, which are family, health, creativity, confidence, love, responsibility, and knowledge. Each of these values represents who I am, which I believe is important for me to have the knowledge I need when dealing with things so that I can be someone who is responsible and confident. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat did you learn about the impact of your seafood choices on ocean health? What challenges, if any, did you encounter when trying to make more sustainable seafood choices?
Summer Jin 2/07/2026 6:15 PMI learnt that despite having different types of salmon in different regions, some salmons are rated red and we should avoid purchasing them. Before buying seafood and make more sustainable seafood choices, it is important to try to purchase green or yellow rated seafood. However, there could be a lot of challenges in finding these ratings. It could be extremely hard when you go to a fish market and the sellers don't provide the informations you need to evaluate whether the choice would be sustainable and whether the seafood your pruchasing is green or yellow rated. -
Summer Jin 2/07/2026 12:08 PMExercising each day helps me relieve my stress and feel fresh. Recently, I have really loved golfing as an exercise, as I found golf to be stress relief and fun to do. However, because of the winter storm, I started stretching by myself before I sleep every night. Stretching could also help relax my body and make me sleep better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Summer Jin 2/06/2026 4:00 PMI found that turning off all the lights in my room and apartment whenever I go to sleep or leave the house during the day could reduce my environmental footprint significnatly while saving energy -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhy is it often difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places?
Summer Jin 2/05/2026 8:49 PMIt's hard to understand the impact of our waste and purchases on others because these impacts are not directly related to us. When our trash gets thrown into trash bins and gets collected by the cars, the trash is away from our lives and would merely make any impacts on us. Therefore, even though the trash will get shipped to dump sites, since we are not close to any dump sites, we typically wouldn't relate and understand the impact of our trash on other people easily. -
Summer Jin 2/05/2026 8:47 PMIn order to observe my personal waste better, I have put up a paper bag and a trash can in my room. The paper bag is mainly for water bottles and other recyclable trash. I will use these two bags to monitor how much trash I am going to generate in the coming weeks -
Summer Jin 2/04/2026 6:00 PMI spent 30 minutes reading and learning about why bees are essential to people and the planet. I have found out that sadly, a lot of the pollinators around us are in danger due to increasing human activities. Human activities like farming practices, climate pattern change, and the use of pesticides or other chemicals have harmed the species around us. In the article I read, I have copied some things we could do to help restore bee populations in below.
- Plant nectar-bearing flowers such as marigolds or sunflowers for decorative purposes on balconies, terraces, and gardens
- Buy honey and other hive products from your nearest local beekeeper
- Raise awareness among children and adolescents on the importance of bees and express your support for beekeepers
- Set up a pollinator farm on your balcony, terrace, or garden
- Preserve old meadows, which feature a more diverse array of flowers, and sow nectar-bearing plants
- Cut grass on meadows only after the nectar-bearing plants have finished blooming
- Use pesticides that do not harm bees, and spray them in windless weather, either early in the morning or late at night, when bees withdraw from blossoms

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterDo you know where your campus or community gets its water? If not, how could you find out?
Summer Jin 2/04/2026 5:55 PMi will be doing this challenge and build habit of turning off water while brushing teeth from now
