Joseph's actions

Simplicity

Core Values

We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.

I will avoid wasting water while waiting for the shower or sink to heat up.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Transportation

Drive Less

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.

Waste

Compost Food Waste

I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use Reusable Bags

If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

COMPLETED 4

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use a Reusable Mug

I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

I will keep 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

Happiness

I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Core Values
What are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?

    Joseph Kasper (104)'s avatar
    Joseph Kasper (104) 4/18/2024 10:38 AM
My top 3 core values are family, friends, and having fun.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
How do you think climate change will affect your region’s water supply? Think about the effects of weather, storms, salinity, and sea level rise, among other changes. How can you find out more about climate change’s impact to your region's water?

    Joseph Kasper (104) 4/16/2024 11:55 AM
We have a big lake where I live and over the years we've seen it slowly shrink over time and today it isn't as big as it used to be when I was younger.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Eco-friendly Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

    Joseph Kasper (104)'s avatar
    Joseph Kasper (104) 4/16/2024 11:53 AM
Erosion is the main water concern in my area.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

    Joseph Kasper (104)'s avatar
    Joseph Kasper (104) 4/16/2024 11:47 AM
I tossed more than I thought I did after tracking it. My family uses compost for their garden.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Joseph Kasper (104)'s avatar
    Joseph Kasper (104) 4/16/2024 11:46 AM
Always use a reusable cup and straws, but trying to repair things that break in everyday life can help keep the broken stuff out of landfills. Reducing your carbon footprint, electricity, and water usage is very beneficial for the environment even if it's just a little bit.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Joseph Kasper (104)'s avatar
    Joseph Kasper (104) 4/16/2024 11:44 AM
It feels like it's true. As a culture that spends most of its time indoors, we miss out on what's happening outside. We don't experience nature as we should because of always being inside.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Joseph Kasper (104)'s avatar
    Joseph Kasper (104) 4/16/2024 11:42 AM
I get to stop and see the small things and enjoy parts of the city I usually ignore when I'm just driving. I get to feel a part of the city more than I do when I just drive.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Drive Less
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Joseph Kasper (104)'s avatar
    Joseph Kasper (104) 4/15/2024 9:23 AM
Being in the US you are basically required to have a car as public transportation isn't as great here as it is in other countries. I find driving to be much more inconvenient when compared to other types of transportation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

    Joseph Kasper (104)'s avatar
    Joseph Kasper (104) 4/15/2024 6:47 AM
Making sure to always bring my reusable bag, and implement that into my routine when I go shopping.

    • Angelo Zazzarino's avatar
      Angelo Zazzarino 4/15/2024 9:09 PM
This is good I started to just keep reusable bags in my car and when I go shopping now I just get what I need because I can't fit everything in my bag.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

    Joseph Kasper (104)'s avatar
    Joseph Kasper (104) 4/15/2024 6:46 AM
Just like plastic bottles, single-use cups are more convenient and are used almost everywhere that serves coffee. It makes me feel a lot better and happier knowing I am making even just the smallest of differences and helping the environment.
